AI art has predicted Joe Goldberg’s next love interest

Are YOU his type? 

New AI art has imagined what the next love interest of Netflix hit series You’s Joe Goldberg could look like, based on his earlier partners’ appearances, and the features he’s previously found attractive.   

Despite Joe – who’s going by Jonathan Moore in the latest series of You – taking a break from falling head over heels in love in favour of solving a whodunnit, he’s a creature of habit and it won’t be long until he’s back obsessing over a new unsuspecting woman.  

Online gaming site 6takarakuji has imagined what his next love interest could look like, which shares various facial features with series’ leading ladies – including Marienne Bellamy’s eye shape and skin tone, ex-wife Love Quinn’s cheekbones, and recurring ex Candace Stone’s nose.  The image was created by blending images of previous love interests, and then asking the AI generator to create a standalone new woman from the results. Image was then refined based on five recurring character traits mentioned in the series’ scripts, and keywords ‘captivating’, ‘magnetic’ and ‘irresistible’. AI image authorised for distribution. 

Speaking on the image the experts said, “The most interesting thing about this art is that it proposes a new application for AI, as casting directors could use generated images as a basis for selecting their ideal cast – particularly for characters in a book-to-film adaptation.”

The image was created by blending together Joe Goldberg’s previous love interests and incorporating the traits he’s highlighted as attractive throughout the series; ‘not caring too much’, ‘honesty’, ‘not showing off’, looking ‘clean’, and ‘liking to take care of things’.  

“Part of the intrigue behind You is that main character Joe gets attached to women based on very little information, meaning he’s mainly driven by looks – it’s disconcerting to see how quickly he becomes obsessed with other characters after minimal interactions,” explained a spokesperson for  6takarakuji, “This image works so well when predicting his next love interest partly because he could genuinely fall in love with anybody.”   

These traits seem to translate to a sultry stare and natural-looking makeup – with Joe’s future lover looking strangely familiar as she nods to previous partners’ features.    

Joe also appears to be unable to keep himself from falling for his future love interests, as he frequently says he ‘feels drawn’ to them without knowing why – so the AI was asked to make the new girl ‘captivating’, ‘magnetic’ and ‘irresistable’, just to fit his tastes.  

Of course, if the new girl were his future love interest, she’d be a big reader or equally as passionate about another creative hobby – perhaps she’s another baker, or illustrator.  

And what would she be called? Using an AI name generator, the site inputted the full name of Joe’s previous partners –  Candace, Karen, Guinevere, Delilah, Love, Marianne and Kate – to see what it suggested. Based on the results, the new girl’s name should be Faith Chadwick.   

As for who could play her, celebrity look-alike tools suggested Claws’ Karrueche Tran, Charlie’s Angels’ Ella Balinksa, Catwoman’s Zoe Kravitz and – surprisingly – Kendall Jenner.  

Funnily enough, also amongst the actresses suggested to play the fictional love interest was You alumni Shay Mitchell, who played Peach Salinger in Season One.
