How to Save up to £100 Per Person on Your Next Flight

Flying can get expensive quickly, especially when factoring in checked baggage fees. According to Skyscanner, checking a bag on flights from the UK can add up to €120 (£101) per bag. Fortunately, the luggage shipping experts at My Baggage have shared their top five tips for maximizing your carry-on luggage and avoiding those extra fees.

1. Ask for a Duty-Free Bag

Most airlines allow you to bring a duty-free bag in addition to your carry-on, free of charge. If your carry-on is a little too full, stop by a duty-free shop after security and ask for a bag. You can place a few extra items in there and bring them onboard without any additional fees. Just be sure to double-check your airline’s specific policy beforehand.

2. Bring a Pillow

Many airlines, including Wizz Air, Jet2, and EasyJet, allow passengers to bring neck pillows for free. To make the most of this, you can remove the cushion and use the cover to store small items like rolled-up t-shirts or bikinis. This trick frees up extra space in your carry-on bag. However, note that Ryanair doesn’t officially allow this, so always check your airline’s rules before travelling.

3. Choose Your Airport Outfit Wisely

Wear your bulkiest clothes, like coats or boots, on the plane. Airlines don’t charge for items you’re wearing, so dressing in layers or wearing large accessories like headphones can help save carry-on space. While not the most comfortable, you can always remove layers once seated.

4. Skip the Toiletries

Toiletries can take up valuable space in your carry-on, and there are strict limits on liquids at airport security. Instead of packing them, buy toiletries after security or at your destination. This can save space and avoid issues with liquid limits.

5. Pack Efficiently

Smart packing is key to sticking with a carry-on. Use vacuum roll bags to compress your clothes and pack only the essentials. Always check your airline’s carry-on size limits to maximize the space you can bring onboard. For example, Ryanair allows bags up to 40x20x25cm, while EasyJet allows 45x36x20cm.
