It turns out, phones left in regular mode can mess with cockpit communications. “Phones not on Airplane Mode and interfering with radios is something that happens under the right circumstances,” the pilot explained to Daily Mail.

This interference—often heard as an annoying buzz—can disrupt critical communication between pilots and ground control. “It depends on things like the phone provider, the location of the plane, and where the passenger is sitting,” @PerchPoint shared. Passengers closer to the cockpit have a higher chance of causing interference, which is why airlines play it safe by asking everyone to switch.

On a recent flight @PerchPoint described how a buzzing sound hijacked his headset as he received crucial directions for landing.

“It’s not the end of the world, but it is definitely annoying when you’re trying to copy down instructions,” he said. And while these issues rarely escalate into major incidents, the aviation industry would rather eliminate the risk altogether.

Tamara Vallois, head of communications at Wizz Air, shed light on the technical side. Even though your phone is far from a cell tower, it’s still searching for a connection, sending out electrical signals in the process. Switching to Airplane Mode disables these signals, ensuring there’s no interference on the aircraft.

Beyond the cockpit, there’s another reason for the rule. Wireless networks on the ground are interconnected through a series of towers, and without Airplane Mode, the influx of signals from passengers flying above could overwhelm the system. The rollout of 5G networks has further raised concerns, as its frequencies come dangerously close to those used by aviation systems near airports.

A History of Caution

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have banned airborne cell use since 1991, even though the risk of interference is minimal. Dai Whittingham, chief executive of the UK Flight Safety Committee, explained to the BBC, “What has been found with experience is the risk of interference is very small. The recommendation has always been that once you are in flight, devices should be in Airplane Mode.”
