Here’s What The Online Safety Act Means For Your Children

If the internet feels like the digital Wild West, the UK government is finally stepping in with a sheriff’s badge.

Enter the Online Safety Act – a sweeping new law designed to rein in tech giants and keep kids safer online. Think fewer dangerous TikTok trends, more accountability from Silicon Valley, and (hopefully) less trauma in the group chat.

Set to officially kick in on 25 July 2025, the Act requires social media, gaming, and search platforms to put kids first – or risk being hit with eye-watering penalties. That means tighter age checks, smarter algorithms, quicker content removal, and even named safety officers within companies.

Oh, and if tech firms ignore it? They could face fines of £18 million or 10% of global revenue. Some execs might even end up behind bars. Yes, it’s serious.

According to Ofcom, 59% of teens aged 13–17 saw potentially harmful content online last month alone. The new rules aim to cut exposure to the worst of it – we’re talking suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, pornography, violence, misogyny, online bullying, and more.

As the regulator put it, this is “about more than moderation – it’s about prevention.” The goal? To make sure the apps kids use every day aren’t feeding them content that could seriously harm their mental health.

Still, not everyone’s convinced it goes far enough.

Ian Russell, who founded the Molly Rose Foundation after his daughter took her own life at age 14, said he was “dismayed by the lack of ambition” in the new rules. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle echoed the sentiment, telling BBC Breakfast: “We want to make sure that things are changed so that… no more kids are lost to social media.”

Meanwhile, groups like the NSPCC argue that private messaging apps remain a loophole. And digital rights activists? They’re worried that all this monitoring could come at the cost of user privacy.

Silkie Carlo, director of Big Brother Watch, warned that age checks could result in “security breaches, privacy intrusion, errors, digital exclusion and censorship.”

The law also includes new criminal offences, like cyber-flashing and sharing AI-generated deepfake porn – two things we wish we didn’t need laws for in 2025, but here we are.

With UK kids spending between two to five hours online daily, and most teens owning a phone by 12, it’s clear some change is overdue. Whether the Online Safety Act is a digital safety net or a surveillance overstep depends on how it’s enforced – and how tech companies respond when the timer runs out.
