Google Just Acquired A Stake In South Korean Eyewear Brand Gentle Monster

Turns out Google’s next big tech play isn’t another Pixel or AI assistant – it’s fashion-forward eyewear. The tech giant has just snapped up a 4% stake in South Korean cult eyewear label Gentle Monster, betting big on a future where smart glasses are less sci-fi cringe and more catwalk cool.

Valued at around €107.3 million, the investment isn’t just about flashy optics. It signals Google’s boldest move yet into the wearable tech market – this time with a serious design upgrade. According to Korea Economic Daily, Gentle Monster will take the creative lead on a new line of XR (extended reality) glasses, set to launch in 2026, while Google handles the tech, including its Gemini AI and Android XR system – built in partnership with Samsung.

If you’re getting Google Glass flashbacks – don’t panic. That project fizzled fast thanks to awkward design and major privacy fears. This time, Google’s learned its lesson: wearables need to work, but they also need to wow.

“What’s changed now is the convergence of more sophisticated AR capabilities, improved miniaturisation, and, crucially, an understanding that wearables must seduce as much as they perform,” KED explains.

And let’s be honest – if anyone can deliver seduction-by-spectacles, it’s Gentle Monster. Known for its sculptural frames, high-concept campaigns and collabs with Maison Margiela and Mugler, the brand brings a much-needed dose of style to Silicon Valley’s hardware game.

Think less tech bro, more tech-chic.

The move comes as AR wearables shift from “cool concept” to “real-world must-have.” Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta frames already blurred the line between fashion and function, and Google’s partnership with Gentle Monster is clearly designed to take things a step further – fusing AI-driven performance with fashion-week-worthy aesthetics.

For Google, this deal is a shot at cultural relevance – proof it can play the long game in a market where form matters just as much as function. For Gentle Monster, it’s a chance to step from cult status to global influence, setting the tone for what the future of smart eyewear should actually look like.

Smart glasses are no longer just about what you see – they’re about being seen.
