The Wristband That Outsmarts Hot Flushes: Meet the World’s First Menopause Thermostat

For decades, menopause solutions have swung between two extremes: medical intervention or stoic endurance. Fans, ice packs, spare pyjamas, quietly suffering through meetings while your internal thermostat goes rogue. But as femtech finally starts catching up with the lived reality of women’s bodies, a new category is emerging – one that treats menopause not as a footnote, but as a design challenge.

Now Embr Wave 2, the world’s first personal thermostat, has been added to Issviva’s menopause product line-up. Worn on the wrist like a watch, the device uses temperature – not hormones, not medication – to help manage hot flushes, night sweats, stress and disrupted sleep. And crucially, it does so using clinically researched, brain-based technology.

Hot flushes and night sweats affect more than 60% of women during menopause, yet they remain one of the most under-engineered health issues in modern medicine. Issviva, part of global health company Essity (the powerhouse behind Bodyform and TENA), is betting that the solution lies not in telling women to “push through”, but in giving them back control.

How a Wristband Talks to Your Brain

The Embr Wave 2 works by delivering patented bursts of cooling or warming to the inside of the wrist – an area dense with thermoreceptors, or temperature-sensitive nerves. These nerves have a direct communication line to the part of the brain responsible not just for thermoregulation, but also emotion, stress, pleasure and sensation.

This matters because hot flushes don’t start in the skin. They start in the brain.

Temperature has a unique neurological pathway that can influence how the body perceives heat or cold. That’s why frustration can make you feel flushed, anxiety can make your hands icy, and cool air can calm you almost instantly. Embr Wave is built around this insight, using intermittent “waveforms” of temperature rather than constant cooling, which the brain quickly tunes out.

The result is a whole-body response: a hot flush that eases, a nervous system that downshifts, a sleep cycle that becomes less fragmented.

Smart Cooling, Not Brute Force

Unlike noisy fans, melting ice packs or bulky cooling vests, the Embr Wave 2 is discreet, silent and wearable anywhere. Controlled via a free app, it offers six temperature modes and more than 30 customisable thermal sessions, delivering moments of cooling or warmth for up to nine hours on a single charge.

It’s non-medicinal and non-invasive – “as safe as holding a warm mug or a chilled glass” – and splashproof and sweat-resistant enough for everyday life. In other words, it’s designed for real bodies, not idealised ones.

Clinical research suggests that wearing the Embr Wave 2 can help control and relieve symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, stress and sleep disruption, and it’s already being used by thousands of women navigating menopause with fewer interruptions and better rest.

Why Issviva Is Betting on Wearable Tech

Issviva’s decision to add Embr Wave 2 to its menopause offering is part of a broader shift toward holistic, evidence-based care – one that combines education, community and technology.

“Issviva only works with brands and businesses that we know can make a material difference to the lives of women on their menopause journey,” explains Charlotte Gulcimen, Global Brand & Innovation Manager, “Our partnership with Embr Wave developer Embr Labs Inc also follows the publication of a study in the Journal of Psychophysiology detailing a breakthrough discovery in how to accurately predict a hot flush before it occurs. Embr’s groundbreaking work in hot flush prediction and management aligns with Issviva’s mission to offer our customers menopause symptom solutions that have a material effect on women’s lives.”

Prediction is the next frontier. If a hot flush can be anticipated before it peaks, relief becomes proactive rather than reactive – a subtle but powerful shift in how menopause is managed.

What the Science Says

The technology behind Embr Wave has surprised even researchers who specialise in thermal comfort.

“Embr Wave surprised our lab’s entire research team who specialize in thermal psychology and comfort. We did not expect a device so small to have this kind of measurable impact on the user’s thermal comfort,” said Dr. Hui Zhang, from the Center for Built Environment, University of California Berkeley.

The implications extend beyond menopause. In clinical studies, the device has also been explored for managing hot flashes in prostate cancer patients – an area long overlooked.

“Hot flash management has been understudied and inadequately managed, and patients with prostate cancer have been suffering for years in silence,” explained  Dr. Alicia Morgans, Medical Director at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, “The results from the Embr Wave pilot study give me hope that we can give patients the relief they need without adding more medicines to treat problems caused by medications used to treat their cancer.”

In other words: this isn’t lifestyle fluff. It’s clinically adjacent technology stepping into gaps traditional medicine hasn’t filled.

From MIT Lab to Menopause Essential

Embr Wave began life as a 2013 MIT student project, later crowdfunded in 2017, and has evolved through years of real-world testing and clinical validation. Embr Labs’ mission is simple but ambitious: improve lives through the power of temperature.

Their insight is deceptively elegant. Our thermoreceptors adapt quickly to static heat or cold, but remain sensitive to change. By delivering temperature in rhythmic waves, the Embr Wave keeps the brain engaged, extending relief without increasing intensity.

The Modems Verdict:

At £273, the Embr Wave 2 is an investment. But for women dealing with frequent hot flushes, broken sleep and the emotional toll of losing bodily control, it offers something rare: agency.

Not a cure-all. Not a miracle. But a well-designed, science-backed tool that acknowledges menopause as a legitimate technological challenge – and treats it accordingly.

And frankly, it’s about time.
