SXSW London 2025: 5 Things You Need To Know About The Shoreditch Tech Festival

Announced for 2025, the London counterpart of the legendary Austin tech, music and culture event is coming to the capital.

With tickets not going on sale until October, you have a few months to convince your boss to pay for you to go.

5 Things you need to know about SXSW Shoreditch:

1. Like everything else trendy, it’s going to be in East London:

European Debut in Shoreditch: SXSW London will mark the festival’s European debut, taking place in the vibrant neighborhood of Shoreditch. Known for its creativity and innovation, Shoreditch will host various events across multiple venues over a week in June 2025, blending music, film, technology, and more.

2. Not everyone is happy about it:

In the main, everyone is pretty excited about the London debut, however, the date chosen by SXSW London – “early June” – would put it in direct competition with four of the UK’s long-established homegrown industry showcase and networking events, Wide Days (Edinburgh), Sound City (Liverpool), Focus Wales (Wrexham), and The Great Escape (Brighton), all of which usually take place in May.

SXSW London spokesperson Ben McKnight said that he was “not prepared to answer questions about other showcase festivals”, but that “there’s been a massive amount of research in terms of the date – I’m not going to go into detail what research has been done, I don’t think there’s more to add”.

In the same conversation, McKnight claimed that SXSW London was a

“Very different offer – it’s not a direct comparison, it’s an event that has an international and global perspective.”

Prior to McKnight’s current role, he worked for sixteen years in the Mayor of London’s press office as a senior press officer, with responsibilities that included “the Mayor’s cultural strategy for London”, as well as leading comms for “Festival UK*2022” and “Unboxed 2022” – better known as the UK’s “Brexit Festival”.

3.  European Focus:

SXSW London will emphasise creative talent from across Europe, providing a platform for emerging artists and innovators, outside the capital and beyond. The Austin counterpart has previously attracted the likes of Deepak Chopra, Mark Cuban, Melinda Gates, Dave Grohl, The Obamas and Steven Spielberg so it will be interesting to see who the capital can attract. Their focus aims to highlight cultural and creative diversity, ensuring the festival is both a showcase and a collaborative space for European talent. A stark contrast to McKnight’s Tory-coded ‘Brexit Fest’.

4. Commitment to Sustainability:

Continuing SXSW’s dedication to sustainability, the London festival will incorporate eco-friendly practices and initiatives aimed at promoting climate action. This commitment is part of a broader effort to drive positive environmental change through the event. Festivals often struggle to balance sustainability when it comes to large-scale events but with SXSW being in the city, surely it’s easier to manage than in a field?

5. Tickets and Participation:

Details about the program will be revealed in the coming months, with badges going on sale in October 2024. Attendees can hope to experience a diverse and immersive experience, similar to what has made SXSW a must-attend event in Austin and Sydney. Unlike high-ticket events like Cannes Lions, SXSW London state they are hoping to work to ensure there are opportunities for the local community, students and families who may have a specific interest in creativity and tech to get involved.
