Dior Has Stuck An £80 Lipgloss To The Back Of Your Phone – And It’s Going Viral

There is a certain type of beauty launch that you don’t so much discover as get ambushed by. One minute you’re scrolling in bed, the next your entire feed is the same ten-second clip: a manicured hand, the back of an iPhone, and a little gold locket sliding open to reveal a pool of pink glitter. Then a finger dabbing balm straight from the phone to the lips. Dior has stuck a lipgloss to the back of your phone, and the internet has lost its composure.

The object in question is the Dior Médaillon Lip Balm, a limited edition from the house’s Christmas collection, and it is, as far as we can tell, the first time the luxury brand has designed a product whose primary home is not your handbag but the back of your phone. It costs £80. It holds two grams of balm. It is, at the time of writing, already showing a ‘Join Waiting List’ on dior.com. Of course it is. (You can still shop it here from John Lewis.)

What Is The Dior Médaillon?

Dior describes it as a “true makeup jewel”, which for once is not hyperbole. The case is a gold oval locket, topped with a sculpted bow and engraved with the Dior signature, that twists open sideways like a Victorian keepsake to reveal the balm underneath. Inside is a single shade, 001 Crystal Pink: an ultra-sparkling, frosted pink with a creamy texture that Dior says delivers 24 hours of hydration and comfort. The small print attributes the hydration claim to an instrumental test on 32 volunteers.

You apply it with a fingertip or a brush, which matters, because the whole point is that you never actually take it out of anything. Here’s the trick: the Médaillon comes with an adhesive backing. Peel it off, line the case up on the template, separate it from the card, press it onto the back of your phone, and that’s it. Your iPhone now has a Dior locket on it, and your lip balm is permanently within thumb’s reach.

Why It’s Everywhere

The Médaillon has done what every beauty launch now dreams of doing, which is to become a format rather than a product. The clip writes itself: back of phone, slide, sparkle, swipe, selfie. It takes four seconds, it works in any lighting, and it is the exact kind of small, satisfying mechanism that short-form video was built for. Unboxing videos are stacking up across Instagram and TikTok, and most of them don’t bother with a voiceover, because they don’t need one.

It also happens to land on a trend Dior didn’t invent but has timed beautifully. Phone charms, bag charms, the return of the rhinestone case, the Labubu-shaped hole in all our lives: after years of the clean, caseless, quiet-luxury phone, we are decorating our devices again. Dior has simply done it in solid gold-tone metal with a two-gram balm inside, and priced it like a piece of jewellery rather than a lipgloss.

The Médaillon Has History

This isn’t a random shape. The Médaillon motif dates back to 1947 and the oval-backed Louis XVI chairs that furnished Christian Dior’s first salon at 30 Avenue Montaigne, chosen by the decorator Victor Grandpierre. It has been quietly woven through the house’s codes ever since, and this year Jonathan Anderson pulled it to the front, putting Médaillon hardware on bags, belts and loafers for autumn/winter 2026. The lip balm is the beauty division’s turn, and the case leans fully into the 18th-century salon reference: rope-twist edging, a fontanges bow, and a Dior signature you can feel with your thumb.

Does The Shade Actually Work?

Crystal Pink is a frosted, high-shine pink shot through with fine glitter, and Dior’s swatches show it reading as a sheer wash of shimmer across lighter, medium and deeper skin tones rather than an opaque colour. Think a 2000s lip frost that has been to finishing school. It is very much a party-season product, and the balm texture means it layers over a lipstick as easily as it goes on bare lips, which is presumably the use case: a top-up that lives on the phone you’re already holding for the photo.

The Practical Questions

A few things worth knowing before you stick £80 to your phone. The adhesive goes on the back of your device or case, so if you’re a MagSafe wallet person, you’ll need to choose. The balm is two grams, which is roughly half a standard lip balm, so this is a top-up tool. Dior’s own instructions assume one careful placement, so measure twice. And because it’s a limited edition Dior has not said whether it will restock.

Why We Care

Why we care: The Médaillon is the clearest sign yet that the phone has become a beauty surface. We’ve had lipstick-phone cases from Rhode, but this is the first prestige product designed to be worn by the device itself. Expect a wave of stick-on compacts, charms and balms from everyone else by spring. Dior just got there first, in gold, with a bow on top.
