Wearable Tech Is The UK’s Biggest Wellness Trend

New research shows that 2025 is shaping up to be the year of wellness tech, with over half of UK adults now owning a health-tracking device. Whether it’s a smartwatch, a fitness tracker, or the latest in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), wearable technology is fast becoming an essential tool for those looking to optimise their health.

The study, commissioned by biowearable brand Lingo by Abbott, highlights that Brits are using wearables to:

  • Exercise more (52%)
  • Improve sleep quality (50%)
  • Make better food choices (33%)

And it’s not just for personal use—wearables are officially the new go-to self-care gift, with a third of Brits having purchased one for someone else.

Wearables Are More Than Just Step Counters

Tracking your daily steps is still the most popular feature (59%), but more advanced health metrics like heart rate (37%) and sleep monitoring (37%) are quickly catching up. Surprisingly, 16% of respondents without diabetes are already using CGMs to gain deeper insights into their health—a trend driven in part by the Glucose Goddess’ recent programme, which has been educating the public on the role of glucose levels in overall wellness.

According to Dr. Amy McKenzie, PhD, medical and clinical director at Abbott’s Lingo business, this shift shows a growing desire for proactive health monitoring rather than reactive healthcare:

“The growing awareness of CGMs and use of health and wellness wearables among people without underlying health conditions demonstrates the proactive interest people have in keeping healthy.”

Gen Z and Millennials Are Leading the Charge

Younger generations are the biggest adopters of health tech, with 74% of 25-34-year-olds owning a wearable device. Among them, CGM usage is at an impressive 38%, highlighting a rising interest in real-time glucose tracking—not just for those with diabetes, but for anyone looking to fine-tune their diet, energy levels, and fitness routines.

“The younger generation’s adoption of CGMs underscores the growing demand for personal data about glucose and its impact on health,” says Dr. McKenzie.

The Ultimate Self-Care Gift

Forget candles and spa vouchers—wearable tech is now a top self-care gift, with 50% of 25-34-year-olds having given one as a present. The trend signals a cultural shift towards prioritising long-term health and wellbeing, rather than short-term indulgence.

A Lasting Trend or Just a Fad?

With health and wellness wearables surging in popularity, Dr. McKenzie believes this isn’t just a passing trend:

“Consumers are seeking more than step tracking or sleep monitoring from their health and wellness wearables. They are pursuing healthier lifestyles, which can only be a positive thing.”

As wearable tech becomes smarter and more intuitive, it’s clear that 2025 is the year of optimised health, and this is just the beginning.
