When Will 3G Stop Working? Here’s What You Need To Know And If You’re Phone Is Affected

If you’re still using an older phone, you might want to check if it’s about to become obsolete. The UK’s mobile networks are pulling the plug on 3G, which means if your device isn’t 4G or 5G-ready, your internet access might just disappear overnight.

Why is 3G Being Ditched?

The short answer is progress. 3G was once cutting-edge, but now it’s outdated. With 4G and 5G dominating, UK mobile providers are phasing out older technology to make way for faster and more energy-efficient networks. The government has set a deadline of 2033 for a total shutdown, but some providers are moving much faster.

Which Networks Are Affected?

O2 is the latest network to confirm it is switching off 3G this year. If you’re with Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, or Sky Mobile, which all run on O2’s network, you’ll be affected too. Vodafone, EE, and Three have already completed their 3G switch-offs, leaving O2 as the last provider to make the change.

While the exact date for O2’s shutdown is still unclear, users will receive notifications before it happens. If you’re still holding onto an iPhone 5 or an early Samsung Galaxy model, it may be time for an upgrade.

What Happens If I Have a 3G Phone?

  • No more mobile internet. You won’t be able to browse, stream, or use apps without WiFi.
  • Calls and texts will still work. They run on 2G, which is not being switched off yet.
  • 4G and 5G phones will be fine. If your phone supports these networks, you don’t need to worry.

Digital Inequality Concerns

Some campaigners are concerned that the phase-out could create digital poverty, leaving behind those who can’t afford to upgrade. The Digital Poverty Alliance has warned that older devices without 4G capabilities could cut people off from essential services.

However, network providers argue that 3G is outdated and inefficient. O2 explained, “3G has been superseded by 4G and 5G networks over recent years, with the 3G network carrying less and less traffic. By focusing our investment on 4G and 5G, we’ll be able to further expand and upgrade services.”

Is Your Phone Affected?

If you’re unsure whether your phone is about to become unusable, check your settings:

  • Go to Network Settings or Mobile Data
  • Look for Network Mode or Preferred Network
  • If 4G or 5G is listed, your phone is fine. If only 3G appears, you’ll need an upgrade.

What Should You Do?

  1. Upgrade your phone. There are plenty of affordable options, including refurbished devices.
  2. Check your area’s coverage, especially if you live in a rural location where 3G was a backup.
  3. Look out for official updates from O2, which will notify customers before the final switch-off.

The 3G shutdown is a step toward faster, more reliable mobile networks, but make sure you’re not left behind. If you’re still using an older phone, now might be the time to embrace 4G.
