ChatGPT Found the Cure For A 4-Year-Old’s Condition That Stumped Doctors

When four-year-old Alex started having daily meltdowns without painkillers, his mum Courtney knew something wasn’t right. But what followed was a three-year whirlwind of 17 doctors, conflicting opinions and still no clear answers. The twist? It was ChatGPT that finally cracked the case.

It all began with what seemed like teething pain, but when Alex started grinding his teeth, Courtney took him to the dentist. No cavities. Next stop: orthodontist. They discovered his palate was too narrow, affecting his sleep and mood. A palate expander helped—temporarily.

Chat GPT helped diagnosis her son

But then came new symptoms: headaches, exhaustion, one leg dragging behind the other. Every specialist they saw zoomed in on one piece of the puzzle, but no one could see the full picture. “Nobody’s willing to solve for the greater problem,” Courtney told TODAY.com.

Frustrated and exhausted, Courtney turned to AI. She fed ChatGPT every symptom, detail from MRI notes, and her own observations—including the fact that Alex couldn’t sit criss-cross. The response? Tethered cord syndrome. It wasn’t just a guess—it matched perfectly with Alex’s mysterious symptoms.

After joining a Facebook group for parents of children with the condition, Courtney realised she wasn’t alone. Armed with this new information, she found a neurosurgeon who confirmed the diagnosis within minutes. “She said point blank, ‘Here’s occulta spina bifida, and here’s where the spine is tethered,’” Courtney said.

Tethered cord syndrome happens when the spinal cord is abnormally attached to the surrounding tissue, causing it to stretch with growth. It’s linked to a form of spina bifida known as “occulta,” often hidden from plain sight. While obvious cases present with visible birth defects, the occulta version can be sneakier, showing up as subtle signs like a skin dimple or even a misaligned belly button.

“It can be difficult to diagnose because children don’t always have the vocabulary to explain what they’re feeling,” said Dr Holly Gilmer, the neurosurgeon who treated Alex.

So where does ChatGPT come in? As Dr Andrew Beam, a machine learning researcher at Harvard, explains: ChatGPT is like a turbocharged medical search engine. It doesn’t replace doctors, but it can highlight patterns and possibilities that overworked clinicians might miss. “It may not have the same blind spots as the human physician,” Beam said.

Still, the experts warn AI isn’t perfect. ChatGPT is prone to “hallucinations”—confidently making stuff up. “You don’t want it to just make things up,” said Beam, particularly in medicine.

But for Alex, it made a world of difference. He’s now had surgery and is on the road to recovery—still sharp, still cheeky, and coaching games from the sidelines when his body needs rest.

As Courtney put it, “You have to be your kid’s advocate.” Sometimes, that means asking AI for a second opinion.
