Solitary confinement has long been a mental and emotional black hole—but what if you could swap a concrete box for a sunset in Thailand, a Parisian cafe, or even a walk through a crowded street in LA? Thanks to a virtual reality programme rolling out in some California prisons, that’s now possible.
At the Central California Women’s Facility, one inmate known as Royal found herself unshackled from her grim surroundings—if only in the mind—when she strapped on a VR headset. Cue the scene: tuk-tuk rides, elephant baths, and the buzz of a Thai market, all without leaving her chair. “It felt real enough to be deserving of a passport stamp,” she said.

This is part of a seven-day VR programme created by the non-profit Creative Acts. Participants—often in solitary confinement—spend four hours a day immersed in scenes from everyday life and global adventures. Afterward, they process what they felt through art therapy sessions involving poetry, painting and theatre exercises. “The VR stirs up the triggers and the trauma and the emotions – and then the art transforms,” said Creative Acts founder Sabra Williams.
It’s not about diagnosis, Williams insists—it’s about self-awareness in an environment designed to suppress it. The programme, which has run in four California prisons, includes VR scenarios that mirror real-life reentry moments: navigating a grocery store, facing a job interview, or enduring family tensions at a Thanksgiving dinner table.

Carlos Ortega, who completed the programme while in solitary, found himself moved by a scene at the Eiffel Tower. “You see tourists, regular people going to and from work,” he said. “That’s when it hit me: I want to live life like that. I deserve it.”
Participants also paint masks—outside reflecting how society sees them, inside showing how they view themselves. Daniel Garcia, serving life without parole, wrote “condemned” on the exterior. Inside? A bright, hopeful sunset.

The data backs it up. After one week of VR programming at Corcoran State Prison, infractions dropped from 735 to one. The results were so dramatic, one solitary unit was shut down entirely.
Still, the use of tech in prisons draws criticism. Tablets, eBooks, and now VR might offer connection, but some argue they distract from deeper reforms. Williams acknowledges the tension: “Do you want to be right, or do you want to make change?”
For Royal, who will parole in May, the takeaway is simple: “Even if someone has nothing in common with me, I can find a way to connect with them.”
Looks like VR isn’t just showing prisoners the world—it’s showing them who they could be in it.
