The Science Behind C+: Coperni’s Biotech Is Changing Fashion’s DNA

The fashion set is no stranger to the spectacle of Coperni – from Bella Hadid’s spray-on dresses to Boston Dynamics mechanical hounds on the runway and a RayBan Meta drop at PFW.

Now the Paris-based house known for its viral moments, has collaborated with Swiss textile-biotech trailblazers HeiQ on a drop called C+: a line of “carewear” that doesn’t just dress your body – it treats it.

The concept is audacious: active garments that support your skin’s health via embedded probiotics and prebiotics. The C+ line-leggings, bodysuits and second-skin tops-are crafted from a 4-way stretch, bio-based material that contains up to 140,000 CFU/g of live friendly bacteria per gram of fabric. These microbes are sealed within a porous, biobased matrix and release onto the skin via heat, movement and friction.

The idea is that your outfit becomes part of your skincare routine: the transfer of “good” bacteria helps rebalance your microbiome, fortify your natural barrier and promote repair-all while you’re looking effortlessly chic. Coperni calls this “carewear,” and it could very well be the next frontier of wearable skincare. “C+ is a new era of clothing designed to nurture your skin. From daily life to sport, the regenerating garments deliver active skincare benefits throughout the day, boosting radiance and enhancing your natural glow,” the brand explains on its official website.

Here’s how the science breaks down: The fabric embeds prebiotics (fructo-oligosaccharides) and probiotics (of the Bacillus genus, specifically Bacillus subtilis) inside a biobased polysaccharide matrix. With each wear, your body heat/fabric contact triggers their gradual release to the skin. According to the brand, the active ingredients remain fully effective for at least 40 washes. After that, the effect tapers-but the performance “continues to deliver.”

The project was years in the making. Coperni’s creative directors, Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant, worked alongside Dr Robin Temmerman at HeiQ Life Sciences to configure the fabric and the encapsulated synbiotic blend. They were tasked with balancing three tricky demands: the science must work, the fabric must feel luxurious, and the aesthetics must remain Coperni-cool. The blend was dermatologically tested and declared safe for all skin types.

‘First, it has to look like Coperni; second, it must behave like biotech,’ is essentially the brand’s silent mantra. The result? A tech-wear piece that doesn’t drop the style mic when it picks up the petri dish.

If you’re tuned into how the definitions of tech, fashion and wellness are merging, this moment is prime. The clothes you wear are no longer just aesthetic-they can be active. The fabric is less passive, more performative. It’s not only about the look, it’s about the logic of what the outfit does for you.

Skincare-infused fashion is already a trend – Kim Kardashian’s brand SKIMS has experimented with collagen face-wraps and David Gandy has dropped aloe-infused athleisure – but Coperni’s C+ is perhaps one of the most technically ambitious and socially ready to land. Unlike a standalone serum you dab on at night, this is a layer you literally wear.

It’s equal parts science and spectacle. You’re used to seeing your feed fill with smart mirrors, wearable sensors and AR beauty try-ons-but what if your clothes themselves embraced that inner circuitry?

Let’s dig deeper into the technology. The porous biobased matrix acts like a capsule for the live microbes and their nutrient fuel (the prebiotics). As you wear the piece, friction and body heat trigger the slow release mechanism. The microbes then migrate onto the skin surface-there they interface with your existing microbiome, helping to bolster the beneficial bacteria and support barrier resilience.

According to HeiQ: “A powerful blend of multiple strains of the Bacillus family and selected prebiotics are delivered to the textile in an entirely bio-based porous matrix… Upon intense, direct contact of the skin with the textile surface, the prebiotics and probiotics detach from the textile and migrate onto the skin in relevant amounts to create a well-balanced microbiome.”

And in their own materials:

“The biobased HeiQ Skin Care cosmetic technology for textiles helps to renew the skin’s natural balance for an improved healthy appearance thanks to active probiotics.”

From a couture standpoint, you’d expect some compromise-but the brand explicitly states that there’s “no impact on fabric properties such as breathability, colour, hand feel or wicking.” In other words: you get the tech, without looking like you’ve stepped out of a lab coat fashion show.

Sustainable-tech is baked into the story, too. The biobased matrix is more than marketing – it claims to be “more than 90% biobased” , and the treatment meets bluesign and ZDHC standards. The implication here is that smart meets sustainable: your outfit not only cares for skin, but arrives with lower environmental footprint credentials.

Paloma Elsesser serves as the face of Coperni’s new C+ collection. The collaboration highlights Elsesser’s reputation for authenticity and modernity, aligning her with Coperni’s move toward science-driven design. The campaign imagery focuses on minimalism and texture, showcasing how the probiotic-infused fabric blends innovation with everyday wearability. The range made its global debut during Coperni’s Spring/Summer 2026 show at Paris Fashion Week, where the brand presented its concept of “carewear.”

From the consumer’s lens, here’s what you’re really buying: a piece that does more than look good. It becomes part of your wellness ecosystem. The line sits at the junction of fashion, biotech and skincare. Whether you’re cultivating your feed, your capsule wardrobe or your wellness routine, wearables are stepping up. And now the garments themselves are doing something.

Of course, nothing is totally flawless. The claim of 40 washes before tapering internal performance begs – I mean, will you still get the “full effect” after 20 or 30 washes? And how measurable will the barrier-fortifying effect be in real-world wear? These are wardrobe questions as much as lab ones. But the fact that the technology even exists signals a shift: from passive fabrics to proactive fabrics.

Beyond its collaboration with Coperni, Swiss biotech company HeiQ has partnered with several major global brands across luxury fashion, activewear, and outdoor performance. Its technologies have been integrated into BOSS’s Green Collection using HeiQ Mint for plant-based odour control; Puma’s high-performance running gear, which features HeiQ Smart Temp thermoregulation; Patagonia’s Capilene base layers, co-developed with HeiQ Mint for natural odour resistance; and Rossignol’s trail-running apparel, also enhanced with responsive cooling innovation.

And so, as we stand at the intersection of style and science, one thing is clear: your clothes aren’t just covering you anymore – they’re caring for you, too. With Coperni’s C+, your outfit might just be your skincare ritual.
