If you’ve ever felt like your Slack notifications are plotting against you, or that your brain has started buffering mid-sentence, you’re not alone. According to new research, one in three adults in the UK are now officially burned out – and work-related stress alone is costing the NHS an eye-watering £28 billion a year.
Stress has become our national pastime – one we didn’t sign up for. But while most of us reach for adaptogenic teas or apps that promise serenity through pixels, one British neuroscientist believes the answer lies not in another meditation course, but in the body’s own wiring.

The SONA™ arrives like luxury skincare meets space-age science – complete with its teal box and portable charging pod.
Meet SONA, a new AI-powered, ear-worn wearable that claims to calm your nervous system through the science of vagus-nerve stimulation. Jane Ollis, CEO and SONA founder is a former NHS leader with a background in medical biochemistry and neuroscience, Jane has traded the boardroom for the biohacking lab – and she’s on a mission to tackle what she calls the hidden epidemic of modern life.
“The survey of 4,418 UK adults conducted by YouGov finds that the risk of burnout remains prevalent, with one in three (34%) adults experiencing high or extreme levels of pressure or stress ‘always’ or ‘often’ last year, compared with 35% the previous year. Meanwhile, nine in 10 (91%) experienced high pressure or stress at some point over the last year.” explains Mental Health UK’s Burnout Report 2025
In other words: we’re all hanging on by a very overstimulated thread.

The Burnout Generation
The Burnout Report 2025 paints a generational portrait that’s hard to ignore:
“Many are still at risk of burnout, with nine in ten experiencing high or extreme levels of pressure or stress in the last year. Signs of a widening generational divide and breakdown in trust, with 18- to 24-year-olds most likely to be absent due to poor mental health caused by stress, amid a sharp decline in likelihood they’d open up with line managers about stress levels.”

When you’d rather hide under the covers than check another email – the universal symbol of modern fatigue.
For Gen Z – the “most connected generation in history” – constant connectivity is a double-edged sword. Their stress is digital, invisible, and often dismissed. That’s where SONA comes in.

The Neuroscience Of The Vagus Nerve
You could mistake SONA for an oversized ear cuff – the kind of tech accessory that wouldn’t look out of place on a Balenciaga runway. But beneath that aesthetic polish lies a serious piece of biotech. The device stimulates the vagus nerve, a sprawling neural superhighway that connects your brain to your major organs. Think of it as your internal Wi-Fi network for calm.

Designed to hook gently around the ear, the SONA device turns science into style
When chronic stress hits, this network jams. The vagus nerve loses flexibility, locking us in a perpetual “fight or flight” loop. SONA claims to restore balance using adaptive AI that personalises gentle electrical pulses to each user’s unique physiology. The result? A subtle tingling sensation that signals your body it’s safe to relax.
It’s “mindfulness you can feel working” – only this time, it’s powered by neuroscience rather than affirmations.

Stress Recovery, Not Stress Relief
Unlike meditation apps or breathwork videos, SONA doesn’t just manage stress; it retrains the brain-body connection through what neuroscientists call neuroplasticity. It monitors heart rate variability (HRV) – the gold-standard measure of nervous system flexibility – in real time, learning how your body responds and adjusting its stimulation patterns accordingly.

The SONA wearable sits snugly in its sculpted charging case – sleek, portable, and ready to rescue your nervous system between Zooms.
In early studies, users reported higher HRV, longer deep-sleep phases, sharper focus and even quicker reaction times within weeks. It’s the kind of quantifiable calm that data-driven millennials can actually get behind. In other words, stress relief has finally joined the smart-tech era.

The Future of Calm
It’s easy to roll your eyes at yet another wearable promising wellness miracles. But SONA stands apart in one important way, its founder isn’t a Silicon Valley disruptor – she’s a scientist. Having worked with NASA, Oxford, and the NHS, Jane Ollis blends lab-level rigour with real-world empathy.

Under the hood: precision sensors and adaptive AI powering SONA’s real-time stress-relief technology.
The first batch of SONA devices ships this December – and they’re already sold out. Which suggests that while our nervous systems may be frazzled, our appetite for smarter self-care has never been stronger.
Because maybe the future of calm isn’t found on a yoga mat, but right behind your ear.

I’ve been testing this beautiful device for about four weeks now. Not only is it a joy to wear (which means I actually want to wear it!), but the effect has been profound, both on my sense of calm and overall wellbeing. Being a bit of a data nerd, I’ve also noticed a clear uplift in my Oura-tracked HRV. I’d previously tried Pulsetto, which I found awkward to wear and, at least for me, pretty ineffective. SONA is in a different league.
