Artificial Intelligence Could Help More Women Get Pregnant Via IVF

For many couples facing fertility struggles, IVF can feel like an emotional rollercoaster strapped to a financial black hole. It’s expensive, unpredictable, and often takes multiple rounds before a successful pregnancy. But what if artificial intelligence could tip the odds in your favour?

That’s exactly what a growing number of fertility clinics are banking on. AI is now being used to streamline and sharpen decision-making throughout the IVF process — from selecting the best sperm to choosing the most viable embryo.

At the Avenues Clinic in central London, medical director Dr Jyoti Taneja explains that their lab has “AI integrated into all aspects of its techniques”. The software scans sperm, eggs, and embryos to assess quality, grading each sample in real time.

During a live demonstration, individual sperm cells appear on-screen, ringed in green and tagged with grades like ‘A’, ‘B’, or ‘C’. “This is the AI,” Dr Taneja told Sky News, “highlighting the best grade sperm.” She claims the tech saves her team hours of manual analysis and can “lead to more successful and healthy outcomes, to minimise miscarriage and other abnormalities.”

Mum-to-be Laura Farrell is one of the early adopters. After transferring her embryos to the clinic, the AI helped select the best one for implantation — and she’s now nine and a half weeks pregnant. “It’s fantastic,” she says. “Women should be aware of that when they make their decision about which IVF clinic to go with because there are so many different choices out there.”

But as exciting as the tech sounds, Farrell is quick to highlight deeper issues: access and inequality. “There is a lot of discrimination with regards to telling women they are not allowed NHS help even though they have confirmed infertility diagnosis purely on the basis they are a single female,” she says.

With a single IVF round costing thousands, she adds, “if AI means you can get first-time results, that’s fantastic” — but that’s little comfort to those excluded from treatment altogether.

Success rates for IVF still vary wildly. In 2022, only a third of women under 35 achieved a live birth using their own eggs. For those aged 43 to 44, that dropped to just 5%.

Still, AI’s role seems promising — and not overhyped. Consultant Ali Al Chami, also at Avenues, says AI isn’t replacing doctors but refining their decisions. “It certainly improves things and gives more clarity for the patients,” he explains.

Dr Ali Abbara from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust agrees AI could “transform” IVF by making it cheaper and more efficient — but warns, “we need to prove a lot of these things before rolling them out.”

It’s early days, but the AI baby boom might be just around the corner.
