Reports of a respiratory virus surge in China might bring back unsettling memories of early 2020, but medical experts are urging calm. The virus in question, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), is neither new nor unexpected. Here’s what you need to know about this trending health concern and why it’s different from the COVID-19 outbreak.
What is HMPV?
Human Metapneumovirus, or HMPV, is a respiratory virus that’s been quietly circulating worldwide for decades. Discovered in 2001, it’s been infecting humans for over 60 years. Dr. Leigh Howard, an associate professor of pediatric infectious disease at Vanderbilt University, explains, “The clinical features are really difficult to distinguish from other viral illnesses, and we don’t routinely test for HMPV the way we do for Covid, flu, or R.S.V.”

Similar to Respiratory Syncytial Virus (R.S.V.), HMPV causes symptoms like cough, fever, nasal congestion, and wheezing. Most cases are mild, but for infants, older adults, and immunocompromised individuals, it can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia. While deaths are rare in high-income countries, they are more common in regions with weaker healthcare systems.
How Does it Spread?
Like many respiratory viruses, HMPV spreads via droplets, aerosols, and contaminated surfaces. It’s essentially transmitted in the same way as colds, flu, and COVID-19. Despite its prevalence, it hasn’t received the same attention due to a lack of routine testing and its often mild presentation.

Is There a Vaccine?
Currently, there’s no vaccine or targeted antiviral treatment for HMPV. However, research is underway to create a combined vaccine for both HMPV and R.S.V., given their similarities. Until then, managing symptoms remains the primary approach.

The Situation in China
Chinese authorities have reported a rise in HMPV cases, particularly among children under 14, especially in northern regions. Influenza cases are also increasing, a trend typical for winter months. Officials expect a spike during the Lunar New Year due to travel and large gatherings but emphasise the situation is under control. “Judging from the current situation, the scale and intensity of the spread… will be lower than last year’s,” said Kan Biao, director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s Infectious Disease Institute.

Public and Global Reactions
In China, many are discussing the virus on social media, with some poking fun at using leftover masks from the pandemic. The World Health Organization (W.H.O.) has not raised concerns, calling the rise in cases predictable for winter. However, experts stress the importance of data sharing to monitor any mutations or unexpected developments.

Should You Worry?
While the situation has similarities to the early days of COVID-19, experts agree the context is vastly different. HMPV is well-studied, has broad population immunity, and is unlikely to pose a severe global threat. As Dr. Sanjaya Senanayake from Australian National University notes, timely data sharing from China is key to ensuring no surprises.
For now, it’s about staying informed and taking basic precautions—good news for anyone weary of another pandemic.
