Forget fancy perfume counters – turns out your body has been blending its own fragrance all along. A new study from the University of Tokyo has revealed that women’s natural scent subtly shifts across the menstrual cycle, with men finding them most attractive during ovulation.
“These results suggest that body odour may in some way contribute to communication between men and women,” the researchers explained in their paper, published in iScience.

The experiment followed 21 women over the course of a month. At four different points in their cycle, each participant wore absorbent pads under their arms. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (a lab technique straight out of a forensic drama), the scientists identified three aroma compounds that spiked during ovulation – typically around day 14, when fertility peaks.
These included (E)-geranylacetone, which carries a fresh, floral, slightly sweet scent, and tetradecanoic acid, which smells more waxy and soapy. When these were added to non-ovulatory odours, men consistently judged the samples as more pleasant.

The twist? The “fertile” scent didn’t just smell better – it changed perception entirely. Men rated the faces linked to those odours as more attractive and feminine. Even more surprising, the aromas had a calming effect. Stress levels, measured via salivary amylase (a stress biomarker), actually dropped after exposure.
Professor Kazushige Touhara, who led the research, said: “We identified three body odour components that increased during women’s ovulatory periods. When men sniffed a mix of those compounds and a model armpit odour, they reported those samples as less unpleasant, and accompanying images of women as more attractive and more feminine. Furthermore, these compounds were found to relax the male subjects, compared to a control, and even suppressed the increase in the amount of amylase – a stress biomarker – in their saliva.”

The study suggests ovulation-linked scents may help soften the natural harshness of body odour, effectively turning armpit chemistry into a kind of biological social cue. “We identified three ovulatory phase increasing compounds that mitigate the basal unpleasant axillary odour, resulting in the ovulatory-phase body odour being perceived as the most pleasant by males,” the team wrote. “Additionally, these compounds alleviated hostility and stress… leading to relaxation in males and an enhanced positive impression of female facial images.”
Science has already shown that men rate women’s voices as more attractive when they’re ovulating, and even find their faces more appealing at this stage. Now, smell is confirmed as part of the evolutionary toolkit too. Forget spritzing a designer fragrance – biology might be doing the heavy lifting.
