Peloton owners have been warned that the touchscreen on their Bike+ could potentially be targeted by hackers.
Cybersecurity company McAfee discovered hackers can access Peloton’s bike screen and potentially spy on riders using the bike’s microphone and camera.
According to McAfee’s Advanced Threat Research team, a hacker could discreetly control the stationary bike’s screen remotely and interfere with its operating system and install apps that look like Netflix or Spotify to steal the users’ log-in information. The cybersecurity team was also able able spy on Peloton users via the camera and microphone, which is normally used for video chats with other riders.
To do this hacker would insert a USB key with a ‘boot image file’ containing code that gains them remote access to a bike, meaning they could install and run any programs, modify files, or set up remote backdoor access over the internet.
Peloton owners are being encouraged to update their device as soon as possible, and ensure they stay watchful when using any internet-connected product.
