Instagram Is Using AI Detectives to Shut Down Teens Who “Lied” About Their Age

Instagram is now using AI to catch teens fibbing about their age – and it is not messing around.

If you thought sneaking onto Instagram with a fake adult birthday was still a rite of passage for teens, think again. Meta has announced it is now using artificial intelligence to hunt down underage users pretending to be older and automatically moving them into restricted Teen Accounts.

Teen Accounts, which Instagram rolled out last year, are designed to be a safer, more limited version of the app. Think fewer random DMs, less dodgy content, and tighter privacy controls. Plus, if teens want to loosen those restrictions, they now need parental approval if they are under 16. No sneaky late-night setting changes here.

Instagram has been quietly using AI to guess users’ real ages for a while, but now it is officially turning that tech towards policing who gets an adult account. And they are getting creative: alongside looking for suspicious birthdays, Instagram is scanning for classic giveaways like “happy birthday” posts and relying on reports from other users to spot anyone trying to slip through the cracks.

Meta insists that it is working hard to ensure its AI gets it right. If the system incorrectly flags an account, users will still have the ability to update their settings. The company wrote in its blog post, “The digital world continues to evolve and we have to evolve with it. That’s why it’s important that we work together with parents to make sure as many teens as possible have the protective settings that come with Teen Accounts.”

To bring parents into the loop, Instagram will also start sending them notifications explaining the importance of making sure their teen’s account has the correct birthday listed. Essentially, Meta wants parents to be the first line of defence against kids trying to jump ahead to an unrestricted experience.

This crackdown comes just weeks after Meta expanded Teen Accounts to Facebook and Messenger too. According to the company, at least 54 million teens globally have now been enrolled into Teen Accounts, and 97 percent of users aged 13-15 have stayed put in their protected zones.

With AI becoming more and more central to how social media giants operate, this move shows how platforms like Instagram are leaning into tech to manage the complex reality of keeping teens safe online. Whether it will stop determined young users from finding new workarounds remains to be seen — but for now, it is a serious step towards a more controlled, age-appropriate experience.
