Instagram’s Vertical Grid: The End of the Classic Square?

Instagram is gearing up for a major visual shift, testing a new aspect ratio for profile grids that could disrupt the classic square-based aesthetic. Currently, the social media giant is experimenting with a 4:5 vertical grid format, meaning users’ posts may appear taller on their profiles, aligning with the platform’s heavy emphasis on vertical Reels and Stories. Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently highlighted the reason behind the test: “The vast majority of what is uploaded to Instagram today is vertical,” he said, noting that forced square-cropping often diminishes users’ content quality.

This change isn’t available to all users yet, as it’s still being trialed among select accounts, according to Instagram spokesperson Christine Pai. However, as Instagram leans into vertical content, it’s evident that Reels and other immersive formats are now taking precedence on the platform. This transition toward 4:5 grids is poised to offer users more space for storytelling, particularly in photo and video content, making visuals more dynamic and appealing.

So, what does this mean for the platform’s signature grid? For many users, especially influencers and businesses who’ve meticulously curated 1:1 grids, this shift could disrupt the aesthetic flow they’ve worked hard to establish. Tall 4:5 posts may interrupt the layout, potentially affecting brand presentation and content flow. Yet, it also opens up new creative avenues. The larger visual space allows users to experiment with creative layouts, effectively giving brands more freedom to craft immersive storytelling.

The emerging 4:5 format does bring several benefits. Taller images can capture more attention, enhancing engagement as users scroll through profiles. Additionally, the new grid provides a better showcase for Reels and other vertical content types, helping align with Instagram’s current direction of promoting short, immersive videos. Yet, the aesthetic disruption is a real concern, especially for businesses and creators who rely on consistency.

To navigate the change, experts recommend balancing 4:5 uploads with elements that work well in the 1:1 space, such as borders or visual guides, so content adapts across both formats. If you’re a brand or creator aiming for visual cohesion, planning and adjusting content layouts will be essential. Embracing this shift means rethinking grid strategies, monitoring analytics for impact, and exploring fresh approaches to optimize your feed for the new dimensions.

Overall, Instagram’s potential move to a 4:5 grid is part of a broader shift to make vertical content the core focus. With enhanced visual appeal and added room for storytelling, this update could redefine the platform’s aesthetics, making it essential for users to adapt and get creative with their grid strategies.
