The usually wholesome world of Sylvanian Families has been thrown into a very unwholesome spotlight. The Japanese toy maker behind the cuddly woodland animals, Epoch Company Ltd, is taking legal action against a TikTok creator whose “Sylvanian Drama” account has turned the rabbits, squirrels and cats into stars of boozy, backstabbing, not-safe-for-kids skits.
The toys, first launched in 1985, are normally marketed as “an adorable range of distinctive animal characters with charming and beautiful homes, furniture and accessories.” Official storylines are usually titled things like Picnic by the sea or Ice cream for everyone. But scroll TikTok and you’ll find Freya the Chocolate Rabbit and Ambrose the Walnut Squirrel embroiled in decidedly darker narratives involving cheating boyfriends, diet culture, toxic men, and even murder.

The account, run by 22-year-old Irish creator Thea Von Engelbrechten, has become a hit, amassing 2.5 million followers and more than 68 million likes. The aesthetic? Fake lashes, sarcastic captions, and a heavy dose of millennial and Gen Z humour. Think Barbiecore meets early-2000s sketch comedy.
It’s been so successful that “Sylvanian Drama” has landed partnerships with Burberry, Marc Jacobs, Hilton and even Netflix. But Epoch isn’t laughing. In a copyright infringement case filed in New York, the company accuses Von Engelbrechten of using its characters without permission and causing “irreparable injury” to its reputation. The maker argues that turning toys associated with innocence into drug-snorting, relationship-destroying caricatures undermines their family-friendly brand.

Von Engelbrechten, meanwhile, has filed a counternotice claiming her work qualifies as parody. In an interview with influencer marketing firm Fohr, she explained: “I’m also really inspired by my cats because they are extremely sassy and self-obsessed… I try to embody that with the Sylvanians.” Asked why she thought her videos resonate, she added: “Maybe it’s because it’s coming from the voice of a 22-year-old who struggles with the same things as [they do]… insecure people, diet culture, toxic men, and sustainability.”

The case highlights a growing tension between traditional brands and TikTok creators who remix nostalgia into viral content. For toy companies, platforms like TikTok present both a marketing opportunity and a minefield, where decades-old IP can suddenly become a meme in ways never intended.
A pre-trial conference is scheduled for 14 August, where both sides will decide whether to settle or battle it out in court. Until then, Sylvanian Families remains caught between two worlds: the idyllic meadows of its official storybooks, and the chaotic, mascara-streaked melodrama of TikTok.
