Bluesky’s Rise: The Platform That Could Challenge Elon Musk’s X
Social media is witnessing a seismic shift as millions leave Elon Musk’s X in favor of Bluesky, the decentralized social network launched by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. The buzz around Bluesky is growing rapidly, with the app topping free download charts and attracting over a million new users in just one day, according to the platform’s official account.

What Makes Bluesky Different?
Bluesky feels familiar to those who used to love Twitter. Users can post, comment, like, and share content in a layout reminiscent of pre-Musk Twitter. However, Bluesky’s standout feature is its decentralization. Unlike X, Bluesky allows users to store data on independent servers, offering greater control over personal information. While most users stick with the standard “.bsky.social” accounts, this feature sets Bluesky apart from other platforms.
Founded in 2019, Bluesky has grown steadily but was invitation-only until earlier this year. Opening its doors to the public has led to an influx of users—especially as Musk’s leadership of X, combined with his alignment with Donald Trump, alienates many.

Why Are Users Flocking to Bluesky?
Political backlash is a significant driver behind the migration. After Musk was linked to Trump’s administration, users began leaving X en masse. Adam Tinworth, a digital journalism lecturer, points out, “The alignment of Musk with president-elect Trump is driving out a lot of people.” Others, including The Guardian, have left X due to growing concerns over toxic content and poor moderation.
Beyond politics, X’s declining quality under Musk’s ownership has frustrated long-time users. After slashing 80% of X’s workforce, the platform’s resources for moderation and bot detection have diminished, creating a less enjoyable user experience. “There aren’t the same resources behind it, and his priorities aren’t focused on trust and safety,” Tinworth adds.

Bluesky’s Celebrity Backing
Bluesky’s growth isn’t just about disgruntled X users. High-profile figures, including Jamie Lee Curtis, Lizzo, and Ben Stiller, have publicly joined the platform, further fueling its appeal. Curtis, for instance, recently posted on Instagram, sharing her decision to delete her X account, adding weight to the exodus.

Could Bluesky Replace X?
Experts remain cautious. Jason Barnard, CEO of Kalicube, highlights that while Bluesky is much smaller than X, it’s gaining trust from major players like Google. “Bluesky is 10 times more important to Google today for factual information,” he notes, even as it remains significantly smaller in size.

However, fragmentation is the new norm. Platforms like Mastodon, Threads, and Discord also attract users based on niche interests, creating a splintered social media landscape. Dr. Steven Buckley warns that this could deepen ideological divides, with X increasingly becoming an echo chamber for right-wing voices.
Bluesky’s future depends on sustaining its momentum. “Networks have to reach a critical mass of users before they take off,” says Tinworth. With its community-driven growth and user-friendly features, Bluesky might just be the social platform poised to redefine online interaction.
