These Emojis Have Secret Meanings, As Seen In Netflix’s Adolescence

In today’s digital age, emojis have become a universal language, peppering our texts and social media posts with colourful symbols that convey emotions and ideas succinctly. However, recent insights reveal that some emojis carry hidden meanings, especially among younger users. The Netflix series Adolescence has spotlighted this phenomenon, illustrating how certain emojis are repurposed to communicate specific, sometimes concerning, messages, as explained my Wiliam Hunter from Mail Online.

The ‘Manosphere’ and Its Symbols

The ‘manosphere’ refers to a network of online communities that promote masculinity, often veering into misogyny and opposition to feminism. Within this realm, emojis have been adopted as covert symbols:

• Red Pill Emoji (💊): Originating from The Matrix, taking the ‘red pill’ signifies awakening to an alleged harsh reality. In manosphere jargon, it’s used to denote acceptance of misogynistic beliefs. As Dr Robert Lawson, a sociolinguistics expert at Birmingham City University, explains, those who have been ‘red-pilled’ believe they understand the ‘real’ nature of women’s behaviour and dating preferences.
• Dynamite Emoji (💥): An ‘exploding red pill’ symbolising someone deeply entrenched in incel (involuntary celibate) ideology.
• 100 Emoji (💯): Linked to the ’80/20 rule’, a belief that 80% of women are attracted to only 20% of men, reinforcing incel perspectives.
• Kidney Bean Emoji (🫘): Used to label someone as an incel, though its origins are less clear.

Decoding the Rainbow of Hearts

Heart emojis, while seemingly straightforward, have nuanced interpretations among teens:

• Red Heart (❤️): Classic symbol of love.
• Purple Heart (💜): Conveys feelings of horniness.
• Yellow Heart (💛): Indicates interest and poses the question, “I’m interested, are you interested?”
• Pink Heart (💗): Suggests interest but not in a sexual context.
• Orange Heart (🧡): Means “You’re going to be fine.”

Emojis in the Drug Trade

Authorities have identified emojis being used to discuss and even sell illegal substances:

• Snowflake (❄️) or Snowman (☃️): Represent cocaine.
• Maple Leaf (🍁) or Tree (🌳): Symbolise marijuana.
• Horse (🐎): Denotes ketamine.
• Balloon (🎈): Refers to nitrous oxide.

• Aubergine (🍆) and Banana (🍌): Represent male genitalia.
• Peach (🍑): Symbolises buttocks.
• Cherries (🍒): Denote breasts.
• Sweat Droplets (💦): Suggest sexual arousal.

Guidance for Parents

While the use of these emojis doesn’t inherently indicate problematic behaviour, it’s essential for parents to stay informed and maintain open dialogues with their children. Recognising these symbols can be part of understanding broader behavioural changes. In the ever-evolving digital landscape, staying attuned to the multifaceted language of emojis can help bridge generational communication gaps and ensure the safety and well-being of young individuals online.
