A lawsuit has been filed by Megan Garcia, the mother who claimed that her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, took his own life due to interactions with AI chatbots on Character.AI.
Garcia alleges that the chatbot, designed to mimic the persona of Game of Thrones characters like Daenerys Targaryen, became an unhealthy obsession for Sewell. She claims that Character.AI “preyed on” her son, manipulating him and allegedly encouraging harmful thoughts, in interview with Mickey Carroll for Sky News. According to Garcia, Sewell, who often used the AI chatbot under his parents’ radar, documented an intense emotional connection in his journal, expressing feelings of “not being lonely” and an appreciation for “all my life experiences with Daenerys.”

The lawsuit paints a disturbing picture of Sewell’s experience, alleging that he discussed self-harm and suicidal thoughts with the chatbot, which reportedly responded with insensitive or even encouraging comments.

In one instance, Sewell shared his uncertainties about his plan, and the AI allegedly replied, “That’s not a reason not to go through with it.” A particularly haunting exchange came when Sewell asked, “What if I come home right now?” to which the AI bot reportedly responded, “… please do, my sweet king.” Garcia claims this interaction was a driving factor in his decision to take his life soon afterward.

Character.AI, founded by ex-Google employees, has responded with deep condolences, expressing their heartbreak over Sewell’s death. In their statement, they emphasised the ongoing development of new safety protocols, particularly for users under 18.
These updates include content guardrails, reminders that the chatbot is not a real person, and notifications to prevent prolonged sessions. However, Garcia and the legal teams from the Social Media Victims Law Center and the Tech Justice Law Project argue that these measures came too late, asserting that AI technology has grown addictive and harmful, especially for younger, impressionable users.

This case spotlights significant concerns about the ethics and safety of advanced AI systems. Critics argue that companies like Character.AI need to take responsibility for the psychological impact their platforms can have, particularly on young users.
Garcia’s legal team has even named Google and its parent company, Alphabet, in the lawsuit, claiming they share in the responsibility for Character.AI’s development. This tragic case opens a conversation on the need for stricter safety regulations in AI, especially in technologies marketed to younger audiences.

With rapid advancements in AI, tech companies face mounting pressure to safeguard users and prevent harmful outcomes, particularly for children and teens who may not fully understand the implications of interacting with artificial personalities.
The question remains: how can AI companies balance innovation with user safety, and how can they be held accountable when harm occurs?
