Can This Pink Barbie Phone Help Us Disconnect from Smartphones?

A Barbie-themed phone has recently been launched in the UK and Europe, with the goal—according to its creators—of encouraging young people to step away from their smartphones more often. The device, predominantly pink and quite simple in design, features no front-facing camera, offers only one game, and has very limited internet access.

The phone is produced by HMD, the company also responsible for manufacturing Nokia phones. HMD claims that this product is aimed at meeting the growing demand for a smaller “digital impact” in people’s lives. However, some argue that teaching individuals how to use their devices in a healthier and more balanced manner would be a more effective approach. There is an increasing movement among parents and advocates to limit or even ban smartphone use for children, driven by concerns over potential negative effects. These concerns include fears of reduced attention spans and exposure to harmful or illegal online content.

In response to these worries, some educational institutions are taking proactive steps. Eton College, one of the UK’s most prestigious schools, has provided some of its students with “brick” or feature phones, which are limited to basic functions like sending and receiving texts and calls.

Lars Silberbauer, a senior executive at HMD, suggests that his company’s Barbie phone aligns with these emerging trends. “We’ve seen this surge, which started in the US, spreading to Europe, where more and more people actually want to reduce their digital engagement,” he stated.

While some may question Silberbauer’s motives, he admits that he would “love” to include a messaging platform like WhatsApp on the Barbie phone. HMD promotes the phone as “chic, sleek, and pink,” claiming that it offers an experience reminiscent of “The Barbie DreamHouse™.” The phone is marketed as a tool for “disconnecting to reconnect” and comes with various Barbie-themed accessories, including interchangeable covers, stickers, crystals, and a beaded lanyard adorned with iconic Barbie charms.
