Drones Are Being Used To Fly Prisoners Drugs

A high-security prison in Lancashire has seen such an influx of drones smuggling drugs that it’s been compared to an “airport” by inspectors. At HMP Garth, inmates have been creating holes in cell windows and using makeshift tools from mop and broom handles to intercept drug-filled drones, according to a report from the HM Inspectorate of Prisons. The report highlights severe security challenges, noting a 45% increase in violence, with many prisoners in need of protection due to escalating drug-related debts.

Nearby residents are also witnessing the issue firsthand. Helen Williams, a local artist, shared that drone activity around the prison is frequent, and she often sees drones hovering. Residents have been advised to contact the police if they spot any suspicious drone activity near the facility.

The inspection report further reveals that prison staff have struggled to keep up with the repairs on broken windows, with some cells left with damaged windows even during the inspection. Cannabis use is reportedly widespread, with 63% of inmates indicating easy access to drugs and one prisoner describing the scene as “like an airport” due to the volume of smuggling drones. Chief Inspector Charlie Taylor emphasised the need for the prison service to find effective solutions to cut off the drug supply facilitated by drones, stating that staff capability and attendance need significant improvements.

“The Chief Inspector of Prisons, Charlie Taylor, has called for urgent action to tackle drones which are frequently bringing in drugs and weapons to prisons holding some of the most dangerous men in the country, including terrorists and organised crime bosses.” Taylor said in an official statement from HMI Prisons.

In response, the Ministry of Justice stated it has “zero tolerance” for drugs and violence in prisons, highlighting measures like X-ray body scanners and no-fly zones to counteract smuggling efforts. In January, 400-meter restricted fly zones were implemented around all closed prisons and young offender institutions across England and Wales in an effort to combat the increasing drone activity.
