If you thought last year was peak AI, Google just said, “Hold my Gemini.” At its I/O 2025 keynote, Google dropped more AI updates than your group chat drops unread messages. From AI shopping assistants to filmmaking tools, it’s clear: we’re living in Google’s Gemini-verse now.
AI Mode: The New Search Default
First up, Gemini AI is crashing your Google Search party. AI Mode – a tab for conversational searches powered by Gemini – is rolling out across the US. You’ll soon be able to shop, deep dive into finance graphs, and even get auto-generated summaries of web content. Basically, your search bar just became a life coach.
Project Starline Becomes Google Beam
Remember that sci-fi 3D video chat booth from a few I/Os ago? It’s had a rebrand. Now called Google Beam, it’s coming soon via an HP device complete with a light field display and six cameras. Duolingo and Deloitte are already on board, which means awkward Zooms might finally get a glow-up.

Gemini 2.5 Gets Deep (Think)
Gemini 2.5 Pro now includes Deep Think, a next-gen reasoning mode that tackles complex maths and coding problems by “considering multiple hypotheses before responding.” In other words, it overthinks just like the rest of us – but smarter.
The slimmed-down, lightning-fast sibling, Gemini 2.5 Flash, is now available to everyone in the Gemini app and will hit Google AI Studio soon. Bonus: it uses fewer tokens, so your budget will thank you.
Veo and Imagen: Lights, Camera, AI
Google dropped Veo 3 (video generation with sound!) and Imagen 4 (text-to-image with better formatting), plus Flow – an AI-powered video editor that lets you stitch eight-second clips into cinematic gold. Think of it as Canva for the TikTok generation, but with neural networks.

Gemini in Chrome and Gmail
From 21 May, Chrome users with AI Pro and Ultra plans will see Gemini in their browser, summarising pages and hopping across tabs like a caffeinated intern. Gmail’s smart replies are also levelling up, pulling tone cues from your inbox to generate custom responses. Boss email? Polite. Mate’s hen do thread? Less formal.

Try It On, Literally
Google’s virtual try-on feature lets you upload a photo to see how clothes look on your actual body – a game-changer for the fashion-curious and changing-room averse. Coming soon to AI Mode.

New Toys: Smart Specs & Auto Passwords
Google and Xreal are developing Gemini-integrated smart glasses (Project Aura), while Chrome will soon auto-replace your hacked passwords – with consent, of course.
The TL;DR? AI isn’t just a feature anymore – it’s Google’s full-time job.
