Netflix is clamping down on password sharing, which is like, a bit annoying
If you have been using an ex’s Netflix password (we’ve all been there) or you’ve been getting away with having been logged into a friends Netflix account all these years, we are sad to say but the glory days are over.
In an attempt to clamp down on password sharing, the video-streaming beamoth have announced that they will launch a trial in which Netflix account holders will need to pay for users who are ‘outside of their household.’ This means that on top of the monthly subscription fee, there will be an additional charge for the use of your account by anyone who doesn’t live with you.
At the moment, one user is allowed to watch on four screens at the same time, but now there will be a charge for extra users. The test is launching in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru first, and then will roll out to other territories over the next few weeks. At the moment the extra charge in Chile is 2,380 Peso which is the equivalent to around £2.26. This new feature is called ‘Add an Extra Member.’
This is one of two ways Netflix is going to be clamping down on the ‘problem’ of password sharing. The second feature they are introducing is called ‘Transfer Profile to a New Account,’ this encourges people to create an account without having to lose any of their previous viewing history, and personalised recommendation they had when they were ‘piggybacking’ on their friends account.
“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans.” explained Chengyi Long, Director of Product Innovation, in a Netflix blog post. She added “While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households – impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”
Explaining the decision to launch in South America first Long said, “Over the next few weeks, we’ll launch and test two new features for our members in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru… We’ll be working to understand the utility of these two features for members in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world.”
Looks like a lot more sign ups are going to be headed Netflix’s way very soon.
