Sainsbury’s is rolling out some serious tech to catch cheeky checkout behaviour — and yes, it involves replays. In a move that feels more “Match of the Day” than meal deal, the supermarket giant is introducing VAR-style cameras at self-checkouts to catch shoppers in the act of not scanning their items properly.
If you’re the kind of person who casually slips a lemon into your bag without scanning (we see you), brace yourself. Shoppers who mis-scan — whether by accident or on purpose — will now get a pop-up notification and a camera replay of the offending moment.

According to The Sun, the new system will flash up a message if something seems off:
“Looks like that last item didn’t scan. Please check you scanned it correctly before continuing.”
Yes, your snack run just became a lot more like a penalty review.
One customer reported being shown a replay because their pack of basil was “too light” for the scanner to detect properly. So it’s not just the usual suspects (a.k.a. wine and steak) under scrutiny — even herbs are getting the big screen treatment.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson explained the techy upgrade:
“We regularly review the security measures in our stores and our decisions to implement them are based on a range of factors, including offering our customers a smooth checkout experience.”
It might sound intense, but there’s a reason supermarkets are stepping up their game. Shoplifting in England and Wales has just hit a historic high, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Police recorded 516,971 shoplifting offences in 2024, a 20% rise from 2023 — and the highest figure since records began in 2003. The ONS even noted a “sharp rise” post-Covid, as people returned to stores (and apparently forgot how to behave in them).

Meanwhile, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has warned that retail crime is spiralling. They estimate shop theft is now costing retailers a whopping £2.2 billion a year.
Their recent survey revealed over 20 million shoplifting incidents annually — but many go unreported. Why? Because shopkeepers, frankly, don’t think the police will do anything about it.
With trust in enforcement low and losses sky-high, it’s no wonder supermarkets are calling in the tech reinforcements. So next time you’re scanning your oat milk and accidentally double-beep your crisps — just know Big Brother Basil is watching.
