The average person spends 34 years staring at screens

According to a new survey, the average British adult will spend about over three decades of their lives engrossed in their smartphone, television or computer screen

In a poll taken of over 2,000 people, it was found that participants spent more than 4,866 hours per year glued to their screens, and furthermore most admitted that a much of this time was not considered ‘productive’.

Almost one third of those surveyed looked at their phone within five minutes of waking up in the morning. A further 64 per cent revealed that they wouldn’t know what to do without their screen time, especially during the lockdown period.

Phone – 2 hrs 25 mins
Laptop – 4 hrs 1 min
TV – 3 hrs 30 mins
E-reader – 42 mins
Tablet – 1 hr 39 mins  
Gaming – 1 hr 3 mins
Total – 13 hrs 20 mins

The study, sponsored by Vision Direct, suggested that on average 3.5 hours is spent gazing at TV screens per day, with a minimum of 4 hours staring at laptops, and 2.5 hours spent looking at smartphones. It was found that it takes less than 20 minutes for the average adult to look at a screen after waking up each day.

The research showed that 301,733 hours will be spent looking at screens over an average adult lifetime of 62 years.
