Vodafone Promises That Price Hikes Are A Thing Of The Past

Vodafone’s £16.5 billion merger with rival Three has officially been given the green light, making waves as the UK’s biggest mobile network with 27 million customers. But here’s the kicker: despite concerns, Vodafone’s chief executive, Margherita Della Valle, is adamant that this mega-merger won’t lead to higher bills.

Speaking on BBC Radio Four’s Today programme, Della Valle said to Michael Race & Graham Fraser that the deal is “self-funded,” which means “no extra costs from public funding and no extra cost for our customers.” That reassurance comes amid fears raised by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that the merger could drive up prices for consumers. However, the CMA has now cleared the deal after securing legally binding commitments to cap certain mobile tariffs for three years and invest heavily in the UK’s 5G rollout over the next eight years.

What Does This Mean for You?

The CMA hasn’t revealed exactly which price plans will be protected, but Vodafone has promised more details in the coming days. For now, the focus is on expanding the UK’s lagging 5G infrastructure and protecting large groups of customers from immediate price hikes. Stuart McIntosh, who led the CMA’s investigation, said the deal is “likely to boost competition” in the UK mobile sector, bringing benefits to consumers and the economy.

Kester Mann, an analyst from CCS Insight, described the merger to the BBC as a “landmark moment” for the UK mobile industry. He added that it strikes a “good balance between nurturing competition and encouraging investment,” which has been a sticking point for regulators.

But don’t pop the champagne just yet. Industry expert Paolo Pescatore said, “It’s a waiting game” to see how the merger plays out. “The bottom line is it will take many years before the full merits of the deal are realised, and there’s a lot of tough decisions to come.”

Lessons from the Past

The UK mobile market has seen similar shakeups before. In 2010, Orange and T-Mobile joined forces to create EE, which was later acquired by BT in 2016. More recently, in 2021, Virgin Media and O2 merged in a £31 billion deal. These consolidations often promise job creation but have also resulted in significant layoffs, as seen with EE cutting 1,200 roles post-merger.

Vodafone and Three, however, claim their merger will create thousands of new jobs. Still, unions like Unite remain skeptical, warning the deal could lead to job cuts and an extra £300 a year on customers’ bills.
