These Are The Electric Cars Eligible For A £3,750 Discount

Electric cars just got more affordable – at least if you pick the right one. The government has revealed the first batch of vehicles eligible for a chunky £3,750 discount under its new grant scheme, aimed at nudging drivers away from petrol and diesel and into something cleaner.

Leading the charge are Ford’s Puma Gen-E and e-Tourneo Courier. These are the first to qualify for the maximum discount, while another 26 models have been approved for £1,500 off. Together, the Department for Transport says this will help EV prices “closely match their petrol and diesel counterparts.” With the 2030 ban on new petrol and diesel cars looming, this scheme is all about smoothing the road to electric.

The catch? Only new cars costing up to £37,000 are eligible. But the greener the production process, the bigger the cut. Models built using sustainable methods like 100% renewable electricity stand the best chance of winning the full £3,750.

Not everyone is convinced. Hugh Bladon, founding member of the Alliance of British Drivers, told Pritti Mistry from The BBC that EVs “don’t cut the mustard.” He argued hybrids are “the way forward” and called for similar incentives to support them.

Charging also remains a sticking point. There are roughly 1.3 million EVs on Britain’s roads but only around 82,000 public charging points. For many, topping up is still more faff than filling up.

Still, the maths looks tempting. According to Ford, the new Puma Gen-E starts at £26,245 – making it cheaper than the petrol version at £26,580 once the grant is applied.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the scheme was making it “easier and cheaper for families to make the switch to electric.” Edmund King, president of the AA, agreed that affordability is a hurdle. “Drivers frequently tell us that the upfront costs of new EVs are a stumbling block to making the switch to electric,” he said. “It is great to see some of these more substantial £3,750 discounts coming online because for some drivers this might just bridge the financial gap to make these cars affordable.”

Mike Hawes, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, welcomed the move, saying it “comes on top of the substantive subsidies already provided by manufacturers.” He urged the government to keep applications moving quickly with September’s number-plate rush around the corner.
