Google Labs Launches Doppl Virtual Try-On App

Enter Doppl, the new AI-powered try-on app from Google Labs, here to spare us the trauma.

Doppl, currently in beta and available to users aged 18+ in the US (with a Google account in tow), is Google’s latest experimental app designed to level up your online shopping game. Instead of the usual lipstick filters or static fashion try-ons, Doppl lets you upload a full-body photo of yourself – or, if you’re camera-shy, use an AI-generated model. From there, it superimposes tops, bottoms, and dresses onto your digital self, helping you visualise whether those slouchy jeans are effortlessly cool or just…slouchy.

In an interview with TechCrunch, Google Labs Product Lead Mike Schuster explained, “We wanted people to see not just how a product looks on them in a static photo, but how it moves with them in real life.” Which is where Doppl’s clever video animation feature comes in – your digital twin doesn’t just pose awkwardly, it moves, struts, and twirls. Think of it as your personal runway, minus the wardrobe malfunctions.

And there’s more. If your screenshot of a cute top cuts off before the hem, Doppl’s “Smart Completions” can fill in the missing pieces – adding trousers, shoes, and other finishing touches. You can also save your virtual outfits and share them with friends, because let’s be honest, sometimes you need the group chat’s approval before committing to a new look.

While the app works on both iOS and Android, there’s a catch: for now, Android users will only be able to access it on Pixel devices. But Google Labs has hinted that more features and clothing categories are on the way, so expect your wardrobe options (virtual and otherwise) to keep growing.

In an interview with The Verge, Schuster added, “People are tired of guessing how a product will look when they buy online. We think Doppl helps remove that uncertainty.”
