The Layoff Bombshell

In a drastic move, 23andMe announced it’s slashing 200 jobs—40% of its workforce—as it tries to navigate turbulent waters. These layoffs are part of a broader restructuring plan to save $35 million annually, though it comes with a steep one-time cost of $12 million for severance and other expenses. Anne Wojcicki, the company’s co-founder and CEO, addressed the tough decision:
“We are taking these difficult but necessary actions as we restructure 23andMe and focus on the long-term success of our core consumer business and research partnerships.”

The company has also decided to halt its therapeutic development projects, instead exploring options to license or sell these assets.

What Went Wrong?

Once valued at $3.5 billion after going public in 2021, 23andMe’s share price has plummeted over 70% this year, trading at less than $5. Revenue between July and September fell to $44 million from $50 million in the same period last year, while losses, though smaller, remain significant at $59 million. The company now faces “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue operating.

Adding to the chaos, seven of the company’s eight board members resigned in September after rejecting Wojcicki’s buyout offer. The resignations further fueled uncertainty about the company’s future direction.

The Hacking Scandal That Shook Trust

Last December, 23andMe confirmed that hackers accessed data from 6.9 million users. While the company insists DNA records weren’t compromised, sensitive information like family trees, birth years, and geographic locations was stolen. Shockingly, the breach also exposed private information of linked accounts in family trees, magnifying the impact.

The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office summed up the stakes:
“23andMe is a custodian of highly sensitive personal information, including genetic information which does not change over time. This makes public trust in these services essential.”
