Apple Is Working On An AI Health Tool

Forget step-counting and bedtime reminders – Apple is reportedly gearing up to drop an AI health coach straight into your pocket. According to Bloomberg, the tech giant is deep into development on “Project Mulberry,” an ambitious AI-powered health initiative that could transform your iPhone into a kind of virtual GP (minus the awkward small talk).

Think of it as the more advanced cousin of “Project Quartz,” Apple’s earlier stab at an AI wellness coach. This new version promises to go further – potentially launching as early as the iOS 19.4 update, rumoured to arrive in spring or summer 2025.

So what exactly does this AI health agent do? According to the report, it’ll collect health data from your Apple devices (like your Watch, iPhone, and maybe even your AirPods) and provide tailored recommendations on everything from sleep to exercise, nutrition, and stress management. No generic “drink more water” vibes here – the AI coach aims to deliver insights that actually reflect your body and habits.

But Apple’s not stopping at algorithmic advice. The company is reportedly training its AI using insights from in-house medical professionals and is now looking to bring in external doctors – including cardiologists, sleep specialists, physical therapists, and mental health experts – to create video explainers on common health conditions. In other words, your Health app might soon feel more like an interactive, science-backed health platform than a data dump for your daily steps.

Perhaps most surprisingly, Apple is finally moving into food tracking – a feature it’s avoided until now. That move could put it in direct competition with apps like Noom and MyFitnessPal, both of which dominate the digital nutrition space. The updated Health app will likely offer smarter tracking tools powered by AI, potentially removing the manual drudgery of logging every almond and oat milk latte.

Still, Apple’s not new to bumps in the road. Its long-running dispute with Masimo led to the removal of the blood oxygen sensor from some Apple Watch models last year – a reminder that even Apple’s sleekest health ambitions aren’t immune to regulatory and legal hurdles.

Meanwhile, Apple’s play comes as the wider healthcare industry is doubling down on generative AI. A recent PYMNTS Intelligence report found that 9 in 10 healthcare execs believe their GenAI investments will deliver strong returns – and most are planning to increase spending in the next year. The future? Smarter, faster, and way more personalised care – powered by data and machine learning.
