Artificial intelligence is making its way into NHS breast cancer screenings, and it could be a total game-changer. A new £11m trial, called Early Detection using Information Technology in Health (Edith), aims to use AI to speed up diagnoses and help treat more patients—without needing two radiologists to review every mammogram.
Right now, two sets of expert eyes are required to ensure accuracy when analysing mammograms. But with AI stepping in, the goal is to reduce the workload and free up radiologists to see even more patients. And with nearly 700,000 women expected to take part in the study, this could be the biggest shake-up in breast cancer detection in years.

The UK government has announced that 30 testing sites across the country will be upgraded with AI-powered technology to assess its effectiveness. If successful, this could mean faster results, more diagnoses, and potentially, more lives saved.
Why This Matters
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, with around 55,000 women and 400 men diagnosed every year, according to Breast Cancer Now. Early detection is crucial, and AI could make screenings more efficient, catching cancer at an earlier stage when treatment is most effective.
Dr Katharine Halliday, president of the Royal College of Radiologists, emphasised the impact AI could have in this space. “AI could have a major impact on radiology, given the volume and complexity of breast screening,” she said. However, she stressed that this is a “rigorous study” and results will “take time.”
With a projected 40% shortfall in consultant radiologists by 2028, Dr Halliday also warned that building radiology capacity remains an urgent priority.

AI in Healthcare: What’s Next?
While AI’s involvement in healthcare is rapidly expanding, some experts are urging caution. Claire Rowney, chief executive of Breast Cancer Now, said that any updates to breast cancer screening must be backed by solid evidence proving they are “safe and effective for women.”
The UK government is also gathering research to help shape a national cancer plan, which aims to transform how cancer is diagnosed, treated, and prevented.

Professor Peter Johnson, national clinical director for cancer, highlighted the urgency of improving early detection methods: “The NHS is diagnosing more cancers at an early stage than ever before, but we know we need to accelerate progress further.”
Science and technology secretary Peter Kyle echoed the sentiment: “Catching cancer weeks earlier could be the difference between life and death.”
With AI stepping in, breast cancer detection could soon get smarter, faster, and more effective—a major win for both patients and radiologists.
