AI Is Being Tested In Care Homes

AI-powered sensors are being installed in the homes of vulnerable people in south London, offering a discreet but powerful safety net for independent living. With no cameras or microphones involved, these smart devices track movement, temperature, and appliance use to identify irregularities—like a missed meal or an unusually long time spent in one room.

For 86-year-old Margaret Linehan, who has dementia, the system offers reassurance. “It’s just for if I fall over or anything. It’s great,” she told James Kelly and Gem O’Reilly at the BBC. The data collected helps carers and family members spot potential issues before they escalate.

Bradley Coupar, a tech-enabled social care manager, explained that the system “learns routines over a period of time” and can recognise when something is off, like a fall or a forgotten cup of tea. In the past year alone, the system has flagged over 1,800 falls, allowing Sutton Council’s Urgent Community Response Service to intervene quickly.

For families, this technology brings peace of mind. Margaret’s daughter-in-law, Marianne Linehan, checks an app linked to the sensors to ensure her movements are normal. “I can look in the mornings and detect her movements throughout the night and know that she is moving, she’s not on the floor or nothing drastic has happened,” she said.

Margaret, however, has also had some unexpected check-ins. One late-night craving led to a 2 AM snack run, prompting her son to call and ask: “Do you know what time it is?” She laughed, recalling, “I didn’t think to know what time, I just wanted a cup of tea and a biscuit.”

Unlike traditional monitoring systems, these AI sensors don’t rely on intrusive cameras or microphones, maintaining user privacy while still providing valuable insights. The programme, which has been running for two years, has been recognised by the UK government as a prime example of AI improving public services while saving costs.

As smart home technology evolves, AI-powered care solutions like this could become the norm, helping elderly individuals maintain independence while giving families real-time reassurance that their loved ones are safe.
