Robots in the Classroom: The UK’s Innovative Solution for School Absences

Robots could soon be taking a surprising role in classrooms, not as teachers, but as “stand-ins” for students. According to a new report led by Anne Longfield, former Children’s Commissioner for England, introducing telepresence robots in schools could be a transformative solution to help reduce the ongoing issue of student absences. The project suggests that robots like AV1, made by tech company No Isolation, could sit in place of absent students, allowing them to attend lessons remotely while in a secure, comfortable location—be it another room in the school or from home. This innovative approach is part of a broader effort to create a “more inclusive” educational environment rather than relying on punitive measures that don’t address the root causes of absences.

The initiative has already shown promising results. Early data from a pilot in Wirral, Merseyside, reported a 21% increase in attendance and a 42% boost in students’ learning hours with the use of these telepresence robots. “The robot sits in the young person’s seat in class, and they access a live stream of the lesson via an electronic tablet in a safe space,” the report highlights. This setup lets students engage in real time without the pressure of physically being in the classroom.

Longfield emphasised that the typical “one-size-fits-all” methods for addressing student absences, such as fining parents, aren’t working effectively. In the UK, the government recently raised fines for school absences—from £60 to £80 for the first offense and up to £160 for a second fine within three years. Further punitive measures, including parenting orders or prosecution, can lead to fines as high as £2,500. Yet, despite the increasing penalties, severe absenteeism rates continue to climb, with recent figures showing that 158,000 students missed at least half their classes during the 2023–24 autumn and spring terms, up from 139,000 in the previous year.

The telepresence robot initiative is part of the “Emotionally Based School Avoidance Strategy,” which aims to address some of the mental and emotional challenges behind chronic absences. The robots provide a way for students to feel connected to their classes and peers, reducing anxiety and offering flexibility that might otherwise be unavailable in traditional setups.

“The reasons why children miss school are often complex,” Longfield noted. “Simply threatening parents with fines is not working for many families.” This technology-forward approach offers an alternative that allows students to learn at their own comfort level without disengaging from their studies entirely.

By bringing telepresence technology into classrooms, the UK could be setting a precedent for how tech solutions can tackle complex issues like school attendance. While this project is still in its early stages, the promising results indicate that telepresence robots might just be the next big step in modernising and diversifying the educational landscape.
