American Airlines is trying out new tech at three airports across the U.S. to address one of the biggest annoyances for travelers—line-cutting during boarding. This technology, currently in testing at Albuquerque International Sunport in New Mexico, Tucson International Airport in Arizona, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia, notifies gate agents with an audible alert if a passenger tries to board before their assigned group.

Designed to make the boarding process smoother and more orderly, the system alerts gate agents, who can then ask passengers to wait for their boarding group. American Airlines explained the system’s purpose in a statement to the Associated Press: “The new technology is designed to ensure customers receive the benefits of priority boarding with ease and helps improve the boarding experience by providing greater visibility into boarding progress for our team.”

When someone tries to board early, the gate agent will politely ask them to step aside and wait until their group is called. In instances where a passenger has a legitimate reason to board with a different group—such as traveling with a companion who has higher boarding priority—the agent can quickly override the system to allow them through.

While still in the trial phase, American Airlines has said the technology is performing well and could play a key role in reducing boarding hassles in the future. This tech-driven approach is part of a broader movement in the airline industry to streamline boarding procedures, using technology to address frequent traveler pain points.

With a smoother, more organised boarding process, the airline hopes to make the travel experience less frustrating for everyone, particularly for those who’ve earned priority boarding status. If this system proves successful, it could set a new standard for boarding practices across major airlines.
