70% Of Us Watch TV With Subtitles Now

Ever found yourself squinting at the screen, desperately trying to make out what your favourite actor just mumbled? You’re not alone. A growing number of people are switching on subtitles—not just for foreign films, but for everything. And no, it’s not because we’ve all suddenly gone hard of hearing.

A recent poll found that 70% of people now watch TV with subtitles on. That’s a massive shift in how we consume content, and it’s not just about accessibility. Whether it’s due to muddled sound mixing, thick accents, or just the sheer convenience of catching every detail, subtitles have become an unexpected must-have for modern viewing.

Subtitles Are Becoming the Norm

According to Netflix, a whopping 40% of its global users keep subtitles on all the time, while 80% use them at least once a month. That’s a lot of people relying on captions for more than just foreign-language content.

Take Bradley Johnston, a 25-year-old who describes his home as a “subtitles household.” He watches everything with captions—not because he needs them, but because they make life easier. “If there’s a subtle moment some people might miss that’s integral to the plot, let me know about it,” he told The Guardian.

Johnston isn’t alone. Many viewers are using subtitles to catch quiet dialogue in prestige dramas, decipher mumbled lines in indie films, or keep up with plot twists while scrolling Instagram. And then, of course, there’s the TikTok generation, who have embraced captions as a core part of content consumption—short-form videos, YouTube clips, and even memes.

Is The Problem Bad Sound—or Just Us?

While subtitles are undeniably helpful, there’s an argument that modern TV and film just don’t sound as clear as they used to. Sound mixer Guntis Sics, who has worked on Moulin Rouge! and Thor: Ragnarok, says dialogue is getting lost in a sea of background noise.

“As technology evolved, especially when it took the leap to digital, a tsunami of sound appeared,” he explains. “Actors used to project towards a fixed mic. Now, with portable mics, performances are quieter—some might say, mumbled.”

Sound mixing has also become more complex. The audio in major productions is optimised for cinema-quality sound systems, not the tiny speakers built into your TV. Unless you have a high-end sound setup (and know how to fine-tune it), dialogue can get lost under layers of background noise, music, and sound effects.

Fixing The Issue—or Embracing Subtitles?

Sics suggests that tweaking your TV audio settings could help—switching to a speech-enhanced mode, adjusting treble levels, or even just adding a rug to your room to absorb echoes. But for many, subtitles aren’t just a crutch—they’re a choice.

Bradley Johnston admits: “I don’t know whether it’s a hearing issue or an attention span issue. Maybe my attention span requires me to actually read the screen to make sure I can get through a long TV show or movie.”

Whether it’s bad sound mixing, multitasking habits, or just the comfort of knowing you won’t miss a thing, one thing is clear: subtitles are here to stay. So go ahead—embrace the captions. Your ears (and your brain) will thank you.
