Move over online banking – the NHS App is levelling up, and it wants to run your health admin like a pro. In what might be the most millennial-friendly update to UK healthcare ever, the government’s new 10 Year Health Plan promises to turn the app into a full-blown digital front door to the NHS.
No more hanging on hold at 8am to nab the last GP slot. With this update, you’ll be able to book, reschedule or cancel appointments from your phone, manage prescriptions, speak to a clinician via video, and even get AI-powered advice on non-urgent issues – all without leaving your sofa (or putting down your oat latte).

Prime Minister Keir Starmer is calling it a much-needed step into the 21st century. “To rebuild our NHS, we have to make sure it reflects the society it serves,” he said. “Through our new app – a digital front door for your care – parents will be able to keep track of their children’s health through an online ‘red book’ fit for the 21st century.” (Quote via UK Government.)
The changes don’t stop there. By 2028, the app will support a new single patient record – basically one giant, secure file that holds all your health data, so you never have to repeat your entire medical history to five different specialists again.

And yes, there’s AI involved. A tool called My NHS GP will help direct you to the right care, whether that’s self-help, a community pharmacy, or a specialist. AI scribes will also help doctors take notes faster, while generative AI will help build care plans. In short: less paperwork, more care.
For parents, the revamped app digitises the iconic ‘red book’, tracks childhood development, and even offers weaning advice and health nudges. For tech lovers, it will soon connect with your wearables – syncing everything from step counts to sleep stats, offering personalised insights and prevention tools based on real-time data.
