Remember when downloading apps felt like the future? That tiny dopamine hit when you tapped “Get” on the App Store? Well, sorry to break it to you, but apps might be heading for the digital dustbin. According to tech thinker George Maier, we’re entering an era where AI agents – not apps – will become our go-to for navigating digital life.
Instead of scrolling through a cluttered screen full of icons (hello, eight parking apps), your AI assistant could soon be handling everything – booking your hair appointment, ordering dinner, paying for parking, and even finding you a hotel room with the best breakfast buffet.

Why open five apps when your AI can do it all with one voice command?
Maier points to Apple’s Siri as a case in point. Imagine asking, “Can you pay for parking here?” and Siri not only figures out your location, but uses the National Parking Platform to process your payment via Face ID – no downloads, no faffing, no parking fines. “In this scenario, the user never downloaded a parking app at all,” Maier explains, in LSE article. “The user’s on-device AI agent interacted directly with a trusted middle layer API to facilitate the exchange.”

This middle-layer concept is key. Think of it as an invisible translator between your AI assistant and the digital services you need. It’s already happening in places – Zapier, for instance, helps connect services behind the scenes – but Maier envisions something far more open, universal and AI-friendly.
In this future, your AI agent builds custom, ephemeral interfaces on demand. Want to compare hotels by breakfast options? Your AI can whip up a comparison screen in real time, tailored to your preferences. No clunky app UIs, no loyalty cards, no endless cookie banners.

Of course, this means businesses will need to rethink everything. “We may need to rethink the architecture, economics and governance of digital markets,” Maier warns. Brands will no longer “own” the user experience. Instead, they’ll compete on how well their services plug into AI agents via seamless APIs.
There are still challenges – verifying identity, ensuring trust, and keeping smaller providers in the game. But if we get it right, this agent-first future could mean fewer distractions, smarter interactions, and digital services that actually work for us.
So yes, your app drawer may soon be obsolete. And honestly? Good riddance.
