Bad News For Long Distance Couples: FaceTime Calls Are Banning Nudity

Bad news for long-distance lovers – Apple is coming for your FaceTime flirt sessions. With its upcoming iOS 26 update, Apple is rolling out a Communication Safety feature that could interrupt your most intimate video calls faster than your WiFi cutting out mid-swoon.

The update, currently in beta, introduces AI-powered nudity detection in FaceTime. Yep, your iPhone will now act like an awkward third wheel. If the system picks up on you or your partner undressing, it’ll immediately pause both audio and video and flash a rather killjoy warning on screen. You’ll then have to manually hit ‘Resume Audio and Video’ if you dare to continue – or hit ‘End Call’ if you’ve lost the vibe completely.

A warning message will appear reading: “Audio and video are paused because you may be showing something sensitive.” And to really hammer the mood home, it adds: “If you feel uncomfortable, you should end the call.” (Quotes via Apple fan site 9to5mac.)

Naturally, the internet had thoughts. One Reddit user summed up the mood with: “Long distance couples in shambles,” while another chimed in: “wtf. All my calls end in undressing.” Someone else took a more workplace-friendly angle: “Well that’s one way to end a work meeting early.”

The feature was first spotted by tech account @iDeviceHelpus on X and later confirmed by 9to5mac. Apple originally outlined the tool last month when it unveiled iOS 26, describing it as an expansion of its Communication Safety tools to help protect users from unwanted explicit content in calls and shared photos. In its blog, Apple explained: “Communication Safety expands to intervene when nudity is detected in FaceTime video calls, and to blur out nudity in Shared Albums in Photos.”

Until now, most people assumed this was just for kids’ accounts – a digital safeguard against online predators. But according to early testers, it looks like the nudity detection is active between consenting adults, too. Whether that’s a feature or a bug… well, Apple isn’t saying.

On the privacy front, Apple assures users that FaceTime calls aren’t stored on the cloud, and no human at Apple is spying on your late-night antics. The detection happens entirely on your device using machine learning – in other words, it’s AI, not Apple staff, calling time on your striptease.

iOS 26 – which also brings a divisive new look called Liquid Glass and live translation for phone calls – will officially launch this autumn. Until then, consider your FaceTime date nights on hold.
