Esther Perel Is Teaming Up With Hinge For A Major Revamp

Your dating app small talk is about to level up – and we’ve got renowned relationship therapist Esther Perel to thank. Hinge, the app that’s long branded itself as the “dating app designed to be deleted,” has teamed up with Perel to rework its signature prompts. The result? A new collection called Your World, featuring 10 thoughtfully crafted conversation starters designed to go deeper than “two truths and a lie.”

In short: your matches are about to get more introspective.

Gone are the vague “what’s your biggest risk?” one-liners. In their place: prompts like “An award my family would give me…”, “Before we meet, you should listen to…”, and “I’m in my element when…” The goal? To make dating app chats feel less like job interviews and more like a window into someone’s real life.

“I used to spend a lot of time in record stores,” Perel told Cosmopolitan, describing how real-world environments once naturally sparked connection. “There was a context, an environment, and we instantly had a lot to talk about.” The Your World prompts are her attempt to recreate that organic vibe – the kind of conversation that unfolds when you’re already living your life, not performing for someone else’s swipe.

One of Perel’s top tips for ditching dating anxiety? Lower the stakes. “Include someone in an activity you were going to do anyway,” she says. “Say, ‘I’m planning a picnic with a bunch of friends. Do you want to join?’” That casual, low-pressure energy is baked right into the prompts themselves, which aim to ease users into more meaningful conversations – and IRL meetups – sooner.

Hinge’s president and CMO Jackie Jantos agrees. “The best prompts allow an individual to offer more about themselves in a way that feels intimate but not overtly so,” she says. And crucially, they’re designed to work beyond the app – as natural conversation starters in real life too.

One surprising takeaway from Perel’s research? The infamous “man holding fish” profile photo trend. “That was the real cultural shock for me,” she joked. “I don’t think in France or Belgium… anybody would post a fish.”
