“It’s good fun and it certainly shows up things that may not be immediately obvious,” Matthews told Chris Baraniuk, Technology Reporter for the BBC. Matthews has since used the findings to make small DIY improvements and commissioned a professional heat loss survey before installing a heat pump.

Thermal cameras work by detecting infrared light, translating invisible heat energy into colourful images. While Matthews reportedly spent £160 on his device, many local councils and organisations, such as Octopus Energy, lend these cameras out for free to help homeowners understand their energy usage.

“We genuinely want to help our customers be more energy efficient. It’s simply the right thing to do, not only because it keeps your bills low, but because it’s better for the environment as well,” Octopus Energy said in an official statement on their website, “We have a couple hundred FLIR thermal cameras that we lend to customers every winter. These nifty gadgets connect to smartphones to quickly spot where heat is either escaping or entering. The cameras work best in the winter when the weather is cold and draughts are easier to spot.”
