If you’ve just been through a breakup and suddenly feel like your ex is starring in a glitchy simulation – popping up on every street corner, in every café, at every mutual friend’s birthday – it’s not just you. TikTok has a theory. And no, it doesn’t involve them stalking you via a burner account (though…).
Enter: the “last meeting” theory. It’s a romantic-sounding internet concept currently doing the rounds on TikTok, and it’s giving the ick a run for its money in viral popularity. According to the theory, you’ll keep randomly running into your ex – until one final, mysterious encounter. After that? Poof. Nothing. Ghosted by the universe itself.

“The last meeting theory says you won’t cross paths ever again,” Sophie Roos, a licensed sexologist and relationship therapist at Passionerad told Her Campus. “Even if you live nearby or have the same social circle, many people find it comforting to know that the chapter is fully closed, and the last meeting theory gives them permission to move on.”

While there’s no scientific research (yet) to back it up, there is something weirdly relatable about the idea. Most of us have a story like this – one accidental run-in post-breakup, followed by… nothing. “This theory is human, comforting, and reflects life in a realistic way,” Roos added. “Even though there are no great studies backing it up, it’s the truth for many people.”

And no, this isn’t a cosmic invitation to rekindle things. Roos warns against using the theory as an excuse to revisit old flames – especially if that “last meeting” left you wistful. “To see them again also doesn’t mean that you need to pick up the relationship to solve things out,” she told Her Campus. “View these meetings as natural and a part of life. You’re the one in charge of when you want to close the door.”
Basically, even if you do see them again, that doesn’t mean it’s fate. It might just mean your local Pret is too close to theirs. But if it shakes you up, Roos suggests keeping the chat light and leaning on your support network after.

“While small talk can feel great, it’s also OK to just say hello and then move on,” says Roos. “If the meeting makes you remember things that make you sad or feel down… don’t keep those feelings for yourself – let someone in.”
