OpenAI’s Viral Video Tool Just Dropped on Bing (And It’s Free)

First, it was AI chatbots. Then came AI-generated headshots. Now? It’s AI videos – and Bing wants in.

Microsoft has just rolled out its shiny new Bing Video Creator, letting users whip up short AI-generated videos directly from text prompts using OpenAI’s viral video model, Sora. The best bit? It’s free (with a few strings attached, naturally).

Available now on the Bing mobile app (unless you’re in China or Russia), the feature lets you input a prompt – like “a golden retriever surfing at sunset” – and get back a five-second 9:16 video, perfect for Reels or TikToks. It’s powered by Sora, the same tech that turned heads when OpenAI launched it back in December 2024. But now, instead of needing a premium subscription, all you need is a Microsoft account and the Bing app.

To try it, head to the Bing mobile app, tap the far-right menu tab, select “Video Creator,” type your prompt and hit create. If you haven’t signed in, it’ll ask you to log into your Microsoft account before generating anything.

So what’s the catch?

Well, it’s not exactly instant. If you go for the Standard generation speed, it could take a few hours to get your five seconds of AI magic. There’s a Fast option too – but you’re limited to just 10 fast generations for free. After that, you’ll need to cough up 100 Microsoft Rewards points per video. (Yep, those random points you’ve probably ignored until now just became useful.)

You can queue up to three videos at once, and when they’re done, you’ll get a notification. Each video will be stored in the app for 90 days, and you can download, share, or copy a link to it straight from the app. And yes, they’ll all come with AI watermarks in line with the C2PA standard to make sure no one mistakes your text-to-video creation for the real deal.

Importantly, Microsoft is building in the same safety measures as OpenAI. That means if you try to get too weird or unsafe with your prompt, it’ll block the generation and warn you.

Want bigger screens and wider shots? A desktop version is on the way and will support the classic 16:9 landscape format.

At present, Sora is also available via a standalone OpenAI website, but access doesn’t come cheap. You’ll need a ChatGPT Plus subscription, which costs around £16–17 per month, to generate short (five-second), low-res (720p) videos. If you’re after high-definition (1080p) and longer lengths, the Pro subscription will set you back roughly £157 a month. By contrast, Bing’s Video Creator gives you a generous handful of free fast generations and unlimited standard ones – without spending a penny.
