Apple’s glossy new AirPods may whisper sweet nothings in a dozen languages – but if you live in the EU, don’t expect them to translate a thing.
The highly anticipated Live Translation feature, part of Apple’s big AI umbrella “Apple Intelligence,” has been quietly locked out of France, Germany, Portugal, Spain and the rest of the European Union.

Europe’s Digital Markets Act has Apple’s AirPods translation feature caught in the wind
On its website, Apple spells it out in fine print: “Live Translation with AirPods is not available if you are in the EU and your Apple Account Country or Region is also in the EU.”
The culprit? Regulation. Specifically, the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) – a sweeping law designed to stop Big Tech from gatekeeping digital services and to push for more interoperability between platforms. Translation might sound like a harmless tool, but under the DMA’s rules, Apple would be forced to open parts of its iOS system to rivals. For Apple, that’s a red line. Instead, the company is effectively geo-blocking the feature until it can find a legal workaround.

From German to Portuguese, Apple’s new AI-powered translation turns your AirPods into a pocket-sized interpreter – unless, of course, you’re in the EU.

This isn’t the first time Apple and the EU have butted heads. Earlier this year, the bloc ruled that nine iOS functions had to be more compatible with competing devices. And in April, Apple was slapped with a £428.5 million fine for preventing app developers from steering users toward cheaper payment options outside its App Store.

Apple’s sleek earbuds can now bridge language barriers in real time – redefining what it means to have a conversation on-the-go.
Apple’s response was hardly subtle: “Yet another example of the European Commission unfairly targeting Apple in a series of decisions that are bad for the privacy and security of our users, bad for products, and force us to give away our technology for free,” the company said.
Across the Channel, however, things look different. UK users will get translation. For now, London regulators aren’t enforcing the same rules. But don’t expect a free pass forever – Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority recently accused Apple and Google of running an “effective duopoly” on mobile platforms, hinting that the two tech giants could soon face their own shake-up.

From coffee runs to boardrooms, Apple’s AirPods have long been the sleek accessory that slips as easily into your lifestyle as they do into your handbag… but only now is Live Translation available
Apple isn’t thrilled, warning: “We’re concerned the rules the UK is now considering would undermine the privacy and security protections that our users have come to expect, hamper our ability to innovate, and force us to give away our technology for free to foreign competitors.”
So, for European users dreaming of chic instant conversations in Italian cafés or Berlin nightclubs – hold that thought. Your AirPods may be sleek, but for now, they’re keeping the mystery intact.
