Asia’s Social Media Trends Are Taking Over – Is the UK Ready?

The next big thing in UK social media might not be coming from Silicon Valley – but from Seoul, Shanghai and Singapore. A new report from European influencer marketing platform Kolsquare suggests that the UK is on the brink of a social media shake-up, as Asian trends take root and redefine how brands connect with audiences.

From live shopping sprees to gamified loyalty schemes, the UK is rapidly catching up to innovations already booming across Asia. And while cultural and regulatory differences mean some ideas are slower to stick, others – like TikTok Shop – are already seeing record engagement.

“The UK is the fastest-moving market in Europe when it comes to adopting Asian trends,” says Katy Link, Head of Brand at Kolsquare. “Leveraging livestream formats, hugely popular in China, is gaining serious traction. TikTok Shop UK saw a 131% surge in shoppers over Black Friday, with users tuning into 6,000 livestream sessions per day.”

So what’s on the horizon?

1. Live Shopping Goes Mainstream

Inspired by China’s billion-dollar livestreaming commerce model, live shopping is becoming a powerful tool for UK brands. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram Live are starting to recreate immersive shopping experiences. With Black Friday 2024 marking a new high for TikTok Shop sales, this trend is quickly moving from niche to norm.

2. UGC Is the New Influencer Gold

Forget polished campaigns – user-generated content (UGC) is what customers want. This year, 86% of brands plan to use UGC to drive interaction. Not only does it feel more authentic, but it boosts conversion rates by 50%, especially when coming from micro- and nano-influencers.

3. Gamified Loyalty Is On the Rise

Asia’s love for gamified shopping is creeping into UK marketing, with brands like Starbucks and McDonald’s leading the charge. From virtual scratch cards to interactive loyalty schemes, the goal is simple: make engagement addictive. The gamification market in Asia hit $6 billion in 2023, and it’s only growing.

4. Seamless Payments Through Social Apps

As shopping and social media continue to merge, digital wallet integration is next. UK platforms are now exploring in-app payment systems, allowing users to browse, shop and buy without ever leaving the app.

5. From Mass Platforms to Closed Communities

A quiet revolution is brewing: a shift away from social media algorithms to private groups, broadcast channels and newsletters. Platforms like Telegram and Instagram’s new broadcast tools are giving creators more control and intimacy with their followers.

6. Employees as the New Influencers

In China, shop assistants double as brand ambassadors. The UK is taking notes. Brands like Sephora are now training staff to create content, blurring the line between customer service and social media strategy.

“With this international shift, UK brands and creators have an opportunity to reimagine how they connect with their audiences,” says Lucie Torres, Marketing Lead at Kolsquare. “Understanding and embracing these trends early will define tomorrow’s winners in the influencer economy.”
