If your relationship arguments are starting to feel like re-runs of Love Is Blind, it might be time to call in some help – but it turns out that help might not come with a Master’s degree or a clipboard. According to a new study published in PLOS Mental Health, AI – yes, ChatGPT – is giving real human therapists a run for their money when it comes to couples therapy.
In a series of tests designed to mimic tense relationship moments (think: one partner brushing off the other’s depression), researchers asked 830 couples to rate responses from both licensed therapists and ChatGPT. The twist? They didn’t know which was which.

Spoiler: they barely figured it out. Participants correctly identified human therapists just 56.1% of the time, and AI responses 51.2% of the time – not much better than flipping a coin. But here’s where it gets interesting: ChatGPT’s answers were preferred. Participants gave the bot higher marks for empathy, understanding, and cultural awareness – basically, the holy trinity of good therapy.
“The study says this may be an early indication that ChatGPT has the potential to improve psychotherapeutic processes.”

In other words, if your partner forgets date night again, an AI might just be the one to help you process that rage in a judgment-free zone. The study highlights how large language models like ChatGPT are stepping beyond admin tasks and dabbling in emotional intelligence – with some surprising success.
Of course, no one’s suggesting therapists should close up shop. Human connection is still, well, human. But with mental health services under strain, AI could step in to offer support where traditional therapy is inaccessible or unaffordable – especially for quick, culturally-sensitive advice when you’re mid-spiral on a Tuesday night.
